I half-watched the Cal-UCLA game last night while "working", and it seemed that all the Cal women had cages on their batting helmets. Didn't notice whether the Bruins did.
What they had looked more open than anything I've seen, btw.

Not sure if it's a rule change, trend, or isolated incident, but they didn't wear them last year AFAIK.

Well, the ladies from Cal go to Cal. The ladies from UCLA go to UCLA. Really, do you need anything more than that?

There's no rule change. They aren't mandatory equipment. Every college player now grew up playing with a cage though, they're used to it.

I noticed many of the Stanford players last year were wearing helmet cages last year, while 2-3 years ago almost none did. I think like starsnuffer said, every college player grew up playing with a cage, so more are starting to use them in college.
