College Roster Sizes, sorry some of you don't get to go with us~

NCAA D1 rosters for baseball in 2024 are to be capped at 40. It’s a couple larger now due to the extra COVID eligibility. From memory, P’s are around 17 and for many programs it’s needed between injuries, inconsistency/development and 9 inning games plus pitch counts. That being said, it does...

The #1 Measure of the Quality of a Fastpitch Pitcher

Age old debate.. may never be settled but priorities often change depending on age level: IMO—> Rec League & 6-9u = spot/throw strikes, 10-12u = speed at close range, 13-14u = whatever combo to be successful/win and make a desired club team, 15u =speed for D1 attention, 16u =whatever combo...

    Why D1 ?

This is correct. We are right in the middle of recruiting cycle and hear it a lot. I was first floored by it but thought a while and remember these are teenage minds who are working for a challenging and public goal. Depending on level of club team, it is a social barometer of achievement...

    Cost of college and scholarships

Got it. Yes, definitely a magnitude bigger than travel. We are on the east coast the teams we are familiar with are 14-18ish. D1 baseball has a stated roster limit, I don’t see one published for softball. Except the NCAA tournament seems to cap at 20.

    Cost of college and scholarships

Agreed on the academics. It helps getting in, get money in some cases and most importantly likely means you can handle a student athlete role with a good GPA (which are published). Keep in mind if someone’s child is exceptional in school and looking the very elite academic schools, many do...

    Cost of college and scholarships

A lot has been covered but just went through D1 process so here‘s some fresh feedback: D1 has up to 12 scholarships for about 20 players PLUS academic merit for many schools PLUS financial. We see kids getting mixes of 20-100% merit + financial aid and some athletic, we see kids getting true...

    16u vs 18u

    100% agree with this.

College camps…. Some lessons learned to pass along

With winter camp season here, here are some conclusions from our experiences. Wrote this to help other families possibly gain from our experiences. I have a D1 committed pitcher who attended D1 and D3 camps. Mostly targeted a mix of high-ish academic ones. Timing (for this 2023/24 period)——>...

    Catching prospect camps for pitchers

Don’t worry and don’t over think it. If she is comfortable in practice, she will not affect the pitchers chances. Pitchers throw to tarps, nets, their catcher, a random catcher, possibly that college’s catchers, dad’s like me…sometimes all in the same camp. College pitching coaches know...

    Why D1 ?

The math is fine for your point which is a good one. There are only 307 D1 softball programs. Softball D1 at 1.8% is amongst the smallest odds to play in college from High School (Basketball 1.3%, Volleyball 1.2% and Tennis 1.5%)… but none of this is new. The variable is always how families...

    Why D1 ?

Excellent points. Academic scholarships at D3 though are variable. For example, 2 top D3 conferences - NESCAC and UAA have few to no schools with academic scholarships.

    Why D1 ?

”MANY Div 3 programs beat Div 1”…. Let’s hear those scores and head-to-head records. Does it happen? Probably. To imply it’s near parity? If we are trying to find the lowest D1 to compare to the highest D3… that cross-over is tiny compared to the amount of schools overall. Most D1 programs...

    Why D1 ?

I doubt anyone here handed their 8 year old a bat thinking of ROI. If you did, that’s on you. Given we know 1.8% of HS play D1, it’s a bad ROI for 49 out of 50 families - strictly cash flow speaking. If you make it, 12 scholarships a team if fully funded. If you spend the money to pursue...

    Why D1 ?

When I am hiring and get resume stacks, I absolutely earmark D1 athletes with similar credentials to non athletes. To play a sport at a high level and get good grades/degree pretty much guarantees a good hire. There is a lot of variability in hiring a graduate with a degree and only a few...

2023 Jan. college camps or team showcases~ WHO'S ATTENDING WHERE?

For 2025’s- make sure you check commits before going to D1 college camps. Especially pitchers and catchers. I have a 2025, last winter we drove to a camp far away- as did many. Coach told campers at end that they were done with pitchers… there were probably twenty 2024 pitchers there. It was...

Question on showcases and attending coaches.

If she has 10-15 schools she is interested in, she can also make a Twitter list and add all of the coaches and school’s softball Twitter to the list. They often post where they are traveling. Won’t solve all the issues but helps. Re: recruiting services, if you do all the emailing and weekly...

    Why D1 ?

It can make college free or affordable. It can allow you to go to a school you otherwise wouldn’t be able to, It gives you a set of experiences that is unique.

    D3 pitching speed

D1 pitchers get treated better with the scholarship pool. In the programs we spoke to it is 50-100%. Hard to minimize this important factor with a generalization.

    DD Has Committed!

Congrats! Awesome result. I couldn’t agree more about camps. Once you have a smaller list of legitimate targets, they are very worth the effort. Camps allow for a coach to evaluate and interact on their field, with their drills, in their own way. It also gives both parties a bit of time...
