I can take the team not being good, but it’s the lack of preparation that irritates me. My daughter pitches, and last year both of our catchers graduated. They didn’t develop anyone for this year. It got so bad at the beginning of the season that my daughter (the pitcher) would field the pitches...

    Spin rate and Velocity

Perfect answer. End the post here. There is nowhere else to go but downhill.

What’s the smallest and largest tournament you’ve been to?

This past summer just outside of Dallas during the heat wave. I think it was 108 degrees without a cloud in sight. There were supposed to be 16 teams, but only 3 showed up. One team wore shorts instead of softball pants. We had to goals (1) not send anyone to the emergency room, and (2) don’t...

We're in Texas too, but the part of Texas where football and basketball are king. Our three coaches are football coaches. It sucks. We play in a 6A powerhouse division, but our school doesn't allocate the same resources towards the sport as the teams at the top of our district. The head...

I need a "bracket" pitcher? What exactly does that mean?

I understand completely. Picking up isn't all bad, but there is a reason why some teams are always picking up. Lol

    Live pitching practices VS bullpens/lessons

No one replied. That is awful. Both are important, however... The live pitching reps is not going to make the other two pitchers more accurate faster. Mechanics fall apart during live pitching, because the player is more concerned with throwing strikes/hitting their spots than proper...

I need a "bracket" pitcher? What exactly does that mean?

You asked the right question. Most of the coaches just asked her what she throws, and then started calling pitches. They didn't ask how she wants to pitch or how she wants the game called. It's like they think they are playing MLB The Show.

I need a "bracket" pitcher? What exactly does that mean?

Brother, I think we may be speaking past each other. Clarifying point: The armband comment was in reference to when a coach is calling the game. Some coaches match the pitch being called to the shift they call. Some of what you said proves my comment about some coaches being terrible about...

I need a "bracket" pitcher? What exactly does that mean?

I have seen situations where in game coaching has won the game, and we have all seen too many situations where in game coaching has lost games. Pitch calling is no different. My daughter pitches, and two summers ago she spent the entire summer as a pick-up player/bracket pitcher (No team dues...

What's more valuable, practices or games?

I agree with the nuance. It really depends how we define practice. Team practice isn't as necessary as individual practice. Please don't misunderstand what I am saying. There are things that cannot be practiced without the team, but the ratio of reps taken individually are going to increase...

What's more valuable, practices or games?

I agree with much of what you say. Practice improves skills. Games improve softball IQ. When our daughter started practicing 11-12 months out of the year around age 11 her skills improved dramatically. When we finally agreed to let her start playing tournament ball around age 14 her softball...

A message to coaches from a pitching instructor.

Unfortunately for softball players, in my neck of the woods football and basketball rule. Softball is just used as a way to supplement some of the football coaches' salaries. Four of the girls on my daughter's TB team have outright quit playing high school ball for this reason. For the most...

    Shortage of Players

I am also in the Dallas area. There is a drop off at 14U. My daughter pitches, so we benefit. She is a “pick-up” player nearly every weekend, and we haven’t paid a penny. In our area you are forced to play year round, or you can’t keep up with everyone that is. Girls come back in the spring, and...

Build a Pitcher: Spin, Speed, Spot

This will settle it. You have 250 percentage points to spread across three categories to build a pitcher from scratch: Spin, Speed, and Spot. Where do you place the points? i.e. Spin 90, Speed 80, Spot 80 Let the games begin… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Travel ball with no Sundays?

We have been in the exact situation. My daughter pitches, and we go to church on Sundays. We avoided select/tournament ball for a long time. Our boys play select travel soccer at a really high level as well. Here are the things that we learned that I wish I would have figured out earlier...

Spin, Speed or Spot??? in light of the WCWS

I don’t think anyone is saying you shouldn’t work on all three. Asking which one is most important doesn’t mean that the other two aren’t important. That being said, training/coaching young pitchers is difficult. It is impossible to work on everything that you would like, so you have to...

Spin, Speed or Spot??? in light of the WCWS

I guess I should stay on topic. The correct order would be location, spin, speed. The caveat is you do need enough speed to compete at your level of play (You don’t see D1 pitchers in the low 50’s other than change-ups). A pitcher with average speed for her respective level of play, and elite...

Spin, Speed or Spot??? in light of the WCWS

The ESPN announcers were having a difficult time identifying pitches throughout the tournament. They were calling Rise v. Screw based on location. The super slow motion replay would show the same exact spin for both pitches. 5-11, off axis (nearly) bullet spin… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
