We definitely saw this called against DD #1's team this summer in a 14U tournament. The slapper had fouled off 12-14 straight pitches and, on the last one, the umpire called her out for a bunt strike three. It was quite controversial and our team lost by a run.
Fellow MA resident, as well. Father of 16U and 14U players who have been involved in travel ball for the last seven years. I don't post much, but I learn A LOT from this site. Enjoy the journey!
Trust me, if the parent(s) make(s) enough of a stink to administration, they will get their kid (or the other kids) moved to a different classroom/teacher (or academic team, if in middle school). I wish that weren't the case. A few years ago, in seventh-grade, the guidance counselor came to us...
Tiger Stadium (LSU) can hold 102K+ according to Wiki (I know). LSU vs. Oklahoma or whomever? How about Bristol Speedway in TN, which can allegedly hold 156K+? Tennessee vs. Georgia/Bama/LSU/Oklahoma/Florida? The possibilities for softball are pretty exciting.
I think it is retracting, at least a little bit, in SE Mass. My daughter's high school of 2500+ kids has needed to enlist 8th graders just to have a JV team the last couple years. It was a close and exciting game that was relatively well-played, as opposed to what some of the commenters were...
Today's semifinal game was a pretty good watch. A back and forth affair between defending champs Midway, TX and a North Carolina team. The starting pitchers did a nice job of hitting their spots, which the NC pitcher took full advantage of with a very generous "outside corner." Overall, as one...
I did have an issue with GC shutting down/off while I was stalking, er scouting another team earlier tonight. It was telling me to clear my GC cache. (I just tried it again with the same team and it closed GC before I could see any results. Maybe they're on to me. This isn't happening with any...
Travel softball, especially at the highest levels, is inherently classist. Most in our society would be unable to afford it in a normal year, never mind a year with high inflation. Luckily, my daughter isn't quite elite enough to be on these types of teams, anyway, because it would be tough to...
Some of the HS coaches here in SE MA are either utterly clueless regarding sportsmanship or are just plain bad human beings. One team's coach was tweeting about her team's "great win," 28-0, over a vastly overmatched conference opponent (a school at which I teach, actually). I'd be fine with her...
I've witnessed several wicked line drives carom off of pitchers' chests at 10U. A few inches higher, and with no face mask, those young girls' (including my eldest DD) lives may have been altered. I'm in the forever face mask and padded chest protector club for as long as my daughters...
This is very good advice. My 5'0" 11-year-old just had a nightmarish first tryout for 12U the other night and dropped four out of five fly balls that were to her. She attributed it to her 11.5 glove, and maybe she was right. I feel like a tool now for not properly preparing her. Off to search...
Doing GameChanger and the book simultaneously seems like a recipe for disaster. I do GC for my DD's 12U team, and I stand near the person who is keeping the book. We confer regarding hits/errors. Still, I make the occasional mistake. Playing catch-up at tournaments due to the last-minute nature...
And if your daughter gets an offer from multiple teams, you'll have a decision to make. I had my 10U daughter try out for five different teams over the last two weeks. She is no superstar by any stretch, but she got offers from three 10U's and two 12U's. They often give a 24-hour or 48-hour...
In southeastern MA, my daughters' organization is having tryouts on August 4, 5 and 6. They have decided not to do any more tournaments (or "competitions" as they are referred to this summer in Massachusetts) after those dates. My 12U daughter had one weekend of games (and no more on the...
Hi Everyone,
I've done a post or two before introducing myself, and I've certainly done some lurking. I have two softball-age daughters who are currently playing 12U (11, first-year in that designation fall ball) and 10U (9, second-year in that designation). I feel that I've learned a lot from...
