hey mts, sorry about any indications in my thread that high school softball is behind here because of the coaching. that is not what i am saying at all. i blame it on the girls and their lack of willingness to work during the off season months to improve and the culture of being okay with being...
okay, one thing i have heard over and over, as well as being taught, is for a pitcher to use a big stride... more stride = more speed. well this summer i have observed some of the faster throwing pitchers actually have a shorter but quicker stride. i first noticed this a couple of years ago with...
i respectfully disagree... i have a radar gun that lays on the shelf at my batting cage the girls bug me to death to use it on them. i actually started using it as reward for their hard work. when they started bugging me to gun them i told 'em if they worked hard i would get it out. the only...
around here high school softball is a joke. i put together a 18u travel team this summer and the girls were so unprepared coming out of their high school seasons that i was simply amazed. we were really up against the wall against the travel teams that had played together for years. the team...
be careful of the "exposure" tournaments! a lot of tournaments are called exposure tourneys because the person putting it on emailed 100 college coaches. doesn't mean that any of them will actually show up. i know, i've been to some of these and they're just an excuse to charge more money. be...
that's awesome. i would love to get to see jennie finch pitch up close.
i have seen monica abbott pitch on a couple of occasions when UT played UK here. 70mph is something that you have to see up close to fully appreciate. she also dwarfed the other players.
hey marc, excellent post. i agree completely. i've seen good hitters with terrible mechanics and terrible hitters with good mechanics.
if i had to pick one from your list i would choose confidence. if a hitter has confidence she has been hitting the ball to get the confidence and she is going...
this screams "danger, danger, danger." i told all of my incoming players that no position is guarenteed and they may play any and many positions before the season is over. if they wanted a guarentee on a position i'd pass on them. sounds like a parent that could a PIA...
AMEN!!! i think i'm going to have this put on a t-shirt and wear to all my tryouts:D i had a dad bring his daughter to one of my practices for a tryout. he kept telling me she can play any position and she has a cannon for an arm. i wanted to tell him that her cannon is apparently misfiring...
Suggers is spot on... the leaning over her front foot will prevent her from advancing. i've seen it 100s of times. i actually had a dad argue with me that all of the "good" pitchers in his dd's 10y/0 league pitched leaning forward and that they were much more accurate than his dd which i had...
here is my dd at the same position. notice her foot is already starting to plant where monica, jenny and cat's foot/weight is still transfering forward. so is my dd planting her foot too soon? any advice would be greatly appreciated...
myself and friend/coach were watching a game today and the catcher threw her hockey style helmet off going after a passed ball. the coaches starting yelling at her after the play to keep her helmet on. my friend was asking why would you not take your helmet off? i told him that many coaches...
great advice. this is something we've been doing for while and i'm sure one of the multitude of pitching coaches we've had taught us this.
would you also suggest doing this in pregame warmups too?
i would have to agree... i don't think there is as much a difference in a baseball swing and fastpitch swing is there are differences a baseball player and fastpitch player, i.e. boys and girls.
boys, especially once they have gotten to school age, derive a lot of their power from upper body...
i know this isn't softball but it's such a great story i thought i would share it. this young man is absolutely amazing and has garnered quite a bit of national attention. he is such an inspiration that one of the teams in the baseball college world series this year had this article and his...
i had actually planned on not coaching until my daughter finished playing. i really disliked the way most coaches seamed to coach a team or even assemble a team just for their own daughters. i didn't want to fall into that catagory...
then, last season my daughter played for a wife and husband...
in this area 50mph 12 year olds are on the higher end. i actually see a lot 16u teams with pitchers throwing high 40s to low 50s. keep 'em down, move 'em around, hit your spots, play some defense and you'll do just fine. i know a high school ace here in town that throws around 48 or so and has...
i've got this one and it works great. under 100 bucks. every girl that i clock with it swears it's wrong but it is dead on the speedometer in my truck. i call it my heartbreaker... every girl thinks she's throwing 60 when she actually throws 50
thanks hal... i'll put this one to work tonight at practice. i'll let you know how it works out.
just a quick background on my dd. she is 17 and has pitched for six years. from the get go she could naturally throw very hard. when she was 12 she was probably one of the, if not the, fastest...
