    Should goal be college?

I've read both threads and decided my response best fit here. Should the goal be college? Short answer; no. What? Why not? You ask. My DD works hard, she loves the game, and she shows some natural athletic ability. College, at 9? Please don't misunderstand my next comment; College is 8 long...

    The Bat Came alive!

There's the payoff. Those hot days watching these young ladies work so hard and sometimes being down on themselves; trying to talk them up sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But when they get to see the fruits of their labor and they feel good about themselves; the day is a little less...

    Throwing BP overhand

Concur. In addition you need to spend 30-60 min once a week at $40-60/lesson. Add this to Hawk's 100 pitches per day and in 2-3 years you will be ready to pitch pool games.

    Help me help my DD

Second year TB parent & coach. First and foremost it is important to know that the move to TB from Rec can be a steep learning curve. In my case, though I realized my DD was behind the power curve, I felt comfortable with the situation and the HC worked very hard to ensure that though my DD...

    Errors Vs Effort

It sounds like what everybody is saying is the scorekeeper's experience and objectivity are sometimes the deciding factor; and a judgement call must be made. So now there are two camps; just like any judgement call. The hitter (read hitter's parents), are upset that it wasn't ruled a BH (OBP...

Dear Catcher.. from your freindly umpire

I have been reading this thread with a lot of interest and I appreciate all the insight. As a coach and a bucket dad this thread has given me valuable knowledge to pass along to all my players, not just the pitchers and catchers. Fun anecdote: When my DD first started pitching and she would...

    Errors Vs Effort

I concur with TMD & fuzzy2651. "Ordinary effort," incudes charging, but not diving so play #1 is certainly a BH. Play #2 could be E6 or BH depending on scorekeepers judgement. This is the line where a scorekeeper's experience and judgement come in and sometimes "you gotta go with your gut."

Ideas for a Charlie Hustle award?

uncdrew, I feel it only responsible to let you know I am going to adopt your idea this year for All-Stars. Pass it around through out practices, let everyone sign it, and then when season is over, let the girls vote on MVP and give the bat away as trophy. Great idea and I promise to reference...

    Complete Newb

Speaking from experience. Unless you are intimately familiar with the development of a pitcher, your DD needs a coach. I tried to watch videos, read forums, and work with my DD; nothing produced results like getting a pitching coach.

OSU v. Florida--the three HR pitches

But it sure is fun watching them try. DD was discussing with teammates about trying to do their hair like some of OU players. Also, fun to listen to my daughter tell me about how she needs a certain type of cleats or should wear visors with heart KN, or why her team doesn't have custom...

OSU v. Florida--the three HR pitches

I love it. You're the underdog. You had to beat the defending champs to get here. You're not even supposed to be in the WCWS. You're facing one of the best pitchers in D1 and you just hit a dinger. A bat flip isn't enough, but a bat slam, maybe that's the answer.

    Tryouts

I agree with this sentiment. The longer you can hold a team together and develop them the better they will be. That being said there is always room for improvement and that may mean cutting 1, 2, or 3 in order to continue to move forward. This is the manner in which DD HC worked through 10U and...

How protective should a catcher be of her mitt?

I concur with ANNASDAD. Not petty. Bats are a different matter, but mitts are sacred. Also, from a catchers point of view, the thing we are asking them to do requires that they feel secure in their equipment and the first part of that is the security they get from trusting their glove; it's the...

    Home Team

One more contribution: It is always fun (frustrating?) when both teams are competing for the same dugout. One girl crowds dugout exit, girl from opposing team tries to edge just a little closer, coach yells "make room, let them out of the dugout!" An assistant coach tries to cut across the field...

    Playing Time and Player Growth

The situation you describe is pretty much the norm. Player development and player growth happen during practice and during pool play. Girls earn their spots during these times and if that is the standard for your team then no one is surprised. I believe in developing players and helping them...

    CF-Extended?? I'm a skeptic.

I am no expert, which is why I turn to you. I could lie and tell you I've done my research, but other than looking around on DFP, I haven't. Girl showed up with a brand spanking new CF-Extended, or some such. Either way you can turn the knob and shorten the bat. I have to admit I was...

    Home Team

I've been in TB for a while and I can tell you, between switching umps, getting the other teams to clear the dugout, and getting a team into the dugout, all while trying to maintain a time schedule and not knowing who the home team is until the coin toss (pool play). Attempting to adhere to any...

    question for coaches

Just to add some flair to the discussion about playing TB players in different positions in rec ball; I play a left-handed TB 1B/OF at shortstop, and a TB 3B in CF, and a TB OF at catcher. So far, so good.

Getting back to the basics ...

DDs team was in a similar situation last year. Two things seemed to work really well to cut down on big innings. 1. Lots of outfield work - catching fly balls and making sure the outfield is crashing on every ground ball (12U is where the OF becomes very important - errors in the infield can...
