New coach here! Any tips on how to hit good softball flyballs? Do you use a special bat to help? This is not a strength of mine…

Practice. I tried a fungo and it hurt my hands worse than just using a normal bat.

Welcome to DFP Claire!

What age group are we talking about?

8U and under - just toss them pop ups underhand.

10U - I’d still probably have around half of the pop ups be thrown, as you’d still want to focus on drop steps / first steps to the ball vs 100% “just run and catch it” kind of drills.

A good tip I have seen is to toss the ball out in front and contact the ball in front with an upward swing. Practice this often and you should be able to get it.

Use a softball bat, something proportional to what the girls are using on your team. It'll take some time to learn but it is so worth it! I used to go to the fields and play a round of fungo golf, it's basically bocce ball. Pick a target and see how few strokes it takes to hit it.

Also hit with two hands on the bat, nobody likes a coach that hits with one hand!!!!

Baseball/softball/fungo bat doesn't really matter at younger ages (12U and lower). Just need to practice and the biggest thing is the toss. Make sure you toss the ball away and out in front of you so you don't get handcuffed. For flyballs, it also needs to be a higher toss .

yup, just fling 'em is easier and you have more control.

Also imo you can just use the tee if it's adjustable to a good height for you to hit flies. Especially if you have a coach retrieving returned balls that can just pop 'em on the tee for you.

If you really want to impress all the spectators during pregame warmups, show off your power by hitting as many balls as you can over the fence during pregame warmups.
I showed my power once last fall but there was a slough on the other side of the fence. No retrieving that one. Ball was out of my own bucket, too, darn it!
Made the parents laugh at least.
