Is the pitcher ever allowed to wear a first base mitt?

My game last night had the pitcher wearing a first base mitt. The umpire, who told me he usually does baseball brought it to my attention and asked if it was legal in softball. It was a scrimmage so I told him I didn't know the rule but I didn't mind if the pitcher used it so there is no need to bring it up. Anyone know the rule for sure?

ASA any player can wear a glove or mitt as long as it isnt any longer than the maximum measurement.

NFHS is the same. As long as the glove/mitt meets specs, any player may wear it.

This is one of those rules that depends on which sanctioning body you're playing for. Some allow a mitt at any position, some don't.

And it's not even a "baseball versus softball" question either. Some baseball rule sets allow mitts to be worn at any position too.
