High school team.

Athletic player that will field and play everything at her position.

Your options are to position her in Centerfield or First Base.

That's all you have to go on... where are you putting her? What's your logic?

Gut reaction, athleticism needed in CF. But I would also consider what's your next best option at each position. How much of a drop-off would you have. If your next 1st baseman catches only 60% of the balls thrown to her, then yeah, you need a change there.

Can’t decide positions just knowing the ability of one player. You’re always trying to come up with the strongest combination of 9 players.

Player A may be your best shortstop but player B is pretty good there also. But player A is a much better third basemen than everyone else you have. Then I am starting player A at third and player B at short. When I do something like that I also talk to player A and explain why I have her in a certain spot. Don’t want her thinking I don’t trust her at short.

At the high school level all positions are critical. Find your best combo and that may mean someone playing a secondary position for the good of the team.

Your pitcher needs to factor into this equation - drop ball pitcher? Superstar is going to 1st. Rise ball (or meat ball!) pitcher, she’s heading to the OF.

That’s all the info. Ok. Where she helps the team the most. And that could mean at her weaker position if there is another strong candidate for the other.

Based on the info provided, put her at 1. There's more action there, and a bad throw to 1 turns into a double or worse. It also just creates a panic in the infield and general lack of confidence. A misplay at 1B is kindergarten level struggles.

We're struggling quite a bit right now because our best option for 1B is our primary catcher and next best option for 1B is our primary pitcher. Finding another option for 1B even close to those two has been an issue, and our next best catcher and pitcher are still significantly less skilled than our #1's.

In HS, player goes to CF. Pick someone for 1B that can hit and throw her 100 balls every practice. Don’t have her field bunts unless she’s ready.

Not knowing where she regularly plays, I'm going with CF. Putting someone in the OF who isn't familiar can be a problem, but putting someone at 1B who isn't familiar can be a disaster.

Good takes... any chance there's a stat out there showing the percentage difference in plays those positions (CF & 1B) are involved in (college stats would work)?
