Things that coaches and parents say, that don't help

Through the years i have heard several that made my skin crawl, even a couple that wanted me to hop the fence. but for some reason the one that bothers me a lot, is a father/parent, making a comment to his/her daughter compaing them ( in a negative way) to an older or even younger sister. Thats just plain wrong, wrong wrong! I've seen several girls that were good athletes/softball players lose their passion for the game. They could never relax and just play! sad, very sad

Here are my favorites. Some of these I have to bite my lip or I find myself saying them, too.

"Focus!". - Huh? Should I get a telescope?

"That pitch was way too (high|low|outside|inside)" - Really? Thanks, Sherlock!

"Get your throws up" - Ahhh! You mean I shouldn't throw into the ground?

"It's just you and the catcher" - If that were true, I wouldn't hear your pointless comments.

"Watch for the change up" - Thanks, bonehead! Now that you said that, how much do you want to bet she throws a fastball?

There are a couple of things that drive me NUTS, and they come from coaches and from parents.

1) Hands to the Ball!
2) Gotta Open Up Now (after strike 2)
3) Gotta protect now (duh)

I keep two devices in my coaches bag specifically for this purpose.

1.) A bag full of suckers. I hand these out to parents who do anything but cheer for their kid. They help
2.) A roll of duct tape. I use this for kids who can't keep their shoes tied, and I hand lengths out to parents who's suckers have failed them.

Hitting is a mental game, any coaching should be to increase the batters success at winning the mental game. Any mechanical corrections should take place in practice.

I do teach my kids to have a huge strike zone when they have 2 strikes, I teach them to hit in this zone, to foul off anything that isn't perfect. If you can get them fouling off balls in a huge zone, then 9 times out of 10 the pitcher will end up throwing them a meatball at some point. My reminder, at this point, is "Two strikes, if you don't like it, foul it off".

Don't think you have to coddle them, the best players are the ones that perform under pressure, these are the ones you look for at tryouts.

I'll drive you nuts 'cause I'll be sayng "Protect" clear in my grave. That strike zone with 2 strikes just got a whole lot bigger in my eyes. Foul until they walk you or give you something to hit. Of course I'm also the one saying "you make the call, don't make Blue make the call" but thats for another thread. :)

This one is funny.

On the other end of this thing...My wife calls pitches and when she hears a base coach make some crack about laying off the change-up that drops in for a strike, she calls another one. One kid got 3 change ups in a row when the coach was yelling at her to lay off it. I looked at her and said, "Your just plain evil"...LOL

I'm sadly guilty of many of these. I think I'll be changing my tune, but quick.

My fave is when someone tells the pitcher and catcher to just "play catch". Like that's what they are doing.
