The way the hips turn as far as technique goes (let's talk about this, since you cant really tell your glutes to do anything)...

There are 3 points in the swing where technique is involved in turning the hips:
1) stride forward - the hips close, then open to even 2) at landing - the hips open halfway 3) at hip slot - they finish rotation

Let's discuss at landing or toe touch. The action below is the key.

Notice both knees rolling over at the same time. If they roll over, the hips begin their turn (opening the hips).

If only one rolls over, the hips only partially turn, and you lunge.

The front leg must land bent. The foot at 45 deg is optimal, since it provides a technique to roll the front knee over.

Some people land with their toe already pointed toward the pitcher. If you notice how they did it, they rolled over their knee in mid-air just before they landed, without the aid of forward momentum and ground forces (less optimal).

A lot of good points. I agree, you can’t tell your glutes to do anything. What do you gather from this?
