Right, I read that before, and I read it just now, but I think it says that the umpire is not really responsible for the correct CR?.......It's on the defense to bring to the attention of the umpire that the CR is improper?

In a game where you are keeping a proper lineup card and subs are being reported — you know, the way it should be — you should prevent the situation from happening. “Sorry coach, she’s not eligible/not the correct CR.”

Yes, you are correct by the way I understand it: in USSSA (not the same in all codes!) it is similar to a batter batting out of order. The umpire is not proactive in discovering the error, and needs to let the defense appeal.

Of course, all of this is assuming the tournament isn’t doing its own thing.

This is complicated. Someone should write a paper describing all of these scenarios so we can keep it straight across all rule sets….
