Any bucket dads use a thumb guard?

That's interesting, I catch all my pitchers and it's the pad at the base of my index finger that takes a beating if I don't catch the ball in the right spot. I have a very large catcher's glove to give myself plenty of margin for error.

I'm on my 2nd one in 8 years. Mold it in hot water and form it around the thumb. Trim it with scissors. You can take direct hits on the thumb and not wet your pants. I catch with the all stars knuckleball mitt. Highly recommended also.

I’m going to have to ask you to turn in your man card for starting this thread (hope you’re a guy). ;)

Buy yourself a single break heel All-Star fastpitch mitt and we’ll forget all about this here, nothing to see folks!
lol I have a good catchers mitt, I just sometimes catch it wrong. The worst is when I catch it near the thumb, and the spin feels like it’s gonna twist it off. I can always tell when she’s throwing harder by how it feels.

Not a bucket dad but a former bucket mom. I wound up getting the Evo Shield catcher’s thumb guard. Started using it probably DD’s sophomore year - she threw a screwball and even though I knew it was coming it caught me in the wrong spot and I saw stars. Couldn’t catch again for a few weeks after.

I broke that thumb years ago sliding into 3B and it tore the ligament at the same time. I think catching the ball wrong reaggravated it. Evo Shield definitely helped but I had a difficult time getting my mitt on while using it.

Yup I just ordered one, I’ll see if it helps or is just a pita.

I upgraded to a couple custom Rawlings HOH mitts and haven’t had any major thumb issues since. When I was using a fielder’s glove, my thumb would suffer on drops. 4A0D12FB-3A2D-4F1A-B0BC-889E3F978EF8.jpeg0ECB827B-1980-49F8-BDDE-4C18FA3C5F8F.jpegDCE84178-DA6A-476D-AC8D-252C11B490BD.jpeg16256F81-BC83-4856-BCD8-49242055E2A9.jpeg
