Instead of yessir, wouldn't "at this present time it counts" be a more suitable answer to insinuate to the coach they have the ability to appeal what they are really getting at?

No. That would NEVER be a suitable response. It is not the umpire's job to make sure the coach does his. In fact, doing so would be unfair.

There has been much debate over the years over the proper thing for an umpire to do when a missed base occurs. Should the umpire signal safe? Should the umpire do nothing? The "proper mechanic" (tangent -- I've always thought that should be mechanism) that orgs want to see has gone back and forth.
