    Two calls from last night:

Barely relevant content follows: I live across the street from the property where the local middle school games are played (bb and sb). I saw the bus arrive with uniformed players for a bb game and walked over with the dog to watch some baseball. There was no umpire there so the coaches took...

    Dropped third strike play

Pseudo relevant content occurs here: Community 15U last night 1-2 count, runner on third. Ball in the dirt, gets past the catcher. I call a ball, roll my indicator wheel, clear the catcher, etc. getting ready for a call at home. Runner steals home safely, moves off, I reset, batter steps...

    Dropped 3rd: Safety Base

I've been rereading this thread including my own statements. Parsing it all, I think we all agree here, it's just semantics. Of course when dealing with multiple rule sets and often ambiguous language, you get these long discussions about a seemingly simple point of rules or play execution...

    Dropped 3rd: Safety Base

To the point of the throw coming from foul territory, USA does say that the br can run in fair territory and not be guilty of accidental interference so I understand where coachjd is coming from.

    Dropped 3rd: Safety Base

The running lane applies to the batter runner which is what you have in a d3k situation. The safety base rules say offense uses contrasting colored portion and the defense uses the white portion. There is no exception made for the d3k situation. And the rules do say that if an errant throw...

    Dropped 3rd: Safety Base

I have seen coaches around here instructing (and practicing) that F3 sets up in foul territory on a D3K and F2 always throws to there. Honestly, if the BR is running properly in the designated lane, and gets hit, that's on the defense. That said, the side effect always seems to be that the...

    Got a good one for you . . .

From the context, I presume they were going to flip a coin on whether the batter should be out or not.

    Got a good one for you . . .

I agree here. You can support it with rules too (although stretching a little). First, USA says in pool play if a player leaves the game for an injury, you compress the lineup and no penalty. This may not be pool play, but we are batting more than 9 so let's assume the rules and exceptions...

    Mound improvements between innings.

Why punish the defense for an infraction by the offense or more specifically why reward the offense for committing an infraction? There are penalties described for a pitcher not delivering a pitch in time and there are penalties for the batter not being ready in time.

    Mound improvements between innings.

Barring some rule about random field maintenance, as to the OP, as long as the defense is ready to go at 90 seconds, they can use that time to hold a Cinco de Mayo parade for all I care. If they aren't ready to go, apply the rule-based penalty as appropriate (same for the offense as well)...

    USSSA approved drying agent

Naturally, "by the book", lacking a list of "approved drying agents" you'd have to disallow it. In practice, it's likely going to be overlooked. If I'm on the plate in a utrip tournament, though, and a coach brings up that the pitcher is using GG and that it's not on a USSSA approved list of...

    Obstruction and Earned Runs

Keeping in mind that the base awards on obstruction aren't designed to be punitive, but to nullify the act of the obstruction. They are placed at the base they would have reached minus the obstruction. If the award is home, barring some other error, I'd call it earned.

Batter and runners think it’s ball 4

Depending on the level, it's "easier" to keep it moving. I've talked a lot about my experiences in community/rec 10u/12u. Sometimes it's enough that there are 9 or 10 players on the field and they are all facing the same direction. Usually, a firm, "Ok, let's roll" is enough to get them...

    Throw hits on deck batter

Rules supplement on interference uses similar language “may be charged with interference@ and such. Rule Supplement 33 part D D. On-deck batters may be charged with interference if they interfere with a throw, a possible tag on a runner, or a fielder’s opportunity to make an out on a fly ball...

    Throw hits on deck batter

@The Man In Blue that’s why I had said I’d have a blocked ball. If the on deck batter was hit but didn’t interfere with the out opportunity call it dead and send everyone back. If USA wanted interference called whenever a ODB was hit by a thrown ball I think they’d explicitly say that. So in...

    Throw hits on deck batter

I’d have a blocked ball as described. Ball is dead and everyone returns. If it prevented an out opportunity then that runner would be out.

    Illegal pitch called

One of my partners called an IP with a runner on third in a tie game, bottom of 7. It was a good call and the right call - catcher set up way out of the box trying to set up the intentional walk. Visiting team was “unhappy”. Oh well.

    Umpire Responsibility

Mechanics wise, PU has responsibility for both of those calls. A coach with a question about a call should request time and, if granted, approach the umpire that made the call (PU in this case). A simple, “Blue, I believe that was trapped and your partner may have had a better view of that...
