Isn't the problem solved by making the cutoff on September 1 instead of Jan 1? It would keep the vast majority of kids with their grade level and not give ones who "redshirt" the benefit of playing down.

Yeah I understand that, and it seems to manifest itself in the Hockey numbers, as that was the example used in Gladwell's book.
However, we see the Baseball numbers show a high proportion of Sept-Dec birthdays (older kids in the grade). Is there something different about baseball? Do they go to...
I don't understand why Sept-Dec birthdays seem to get lower representation for softball? Those are the oldest kids in the grade, who should theoretically have the advantage? The baseball graph seems more intuitive to me, which shows Sept-Dec birthdays have a much higher representation.

Big10 seems behind on coaching. They're a P5 conference, surely they should be able to recruit at a decent level right?
They do suffer from location, as softball players are more likely to stay closer to home vs a player willing to travel cross country to play football at the University of...
Thanks for the replies. I'm currently coaching a team right now and don't mind getting more involved. Just wondering whether someone will scoff at the idea of practicing twice a week plus a game vs only once (rec baseball already does 3 events during the spring).
I'd like to try and level up...
Hey DFP,
I wanted to ask other members how often events (practices and games) are held for their rec softball leagues (8u or 10u)? For us, it's just one practice and one game (2 events) per week in season. Our league's all star teams are getting smoked by other leagues that do 3 events per...
When it comes to player development, how much more effective is team practice vs working on skills individually?
Seems like these multi state nationals teams do fine collecting studs from several states and plugging them in come tourney time.

Thanks, it's always a constant debate with myself on how nitpicky I should be with mechanics. On one hand I understand that we need to let the kids have fun and play, but on the other hand, my DDs success so far is a result of constant small improvements being made to her mechanics.
On the tee...
A good tip I have seen is to toss the ball out in front and contact the ball in front with an upward swing. Practice this often and you should be able to get it.

Season started and she's been very successful at the plate (8u coach pitch caveats aside). She consistently gets really good contact and has decent pitch selection (still chases balls high in the zone but doesn't everyone?)
Despite her success, I noticed her hands dropping and bat dragging in a...
I've heard cases where a girl played baseball until high school where she switched to softball and ended up playing in college.
The skills are really transferable so you can probably keep her in baseball until she tells you when/if she wants to switch.
At the 8u level it's likely that baseball...
I appreciate it. I'm definitely going to just let her swing it without making her think too much.
These questions are moreso for my own education. IMO thing that'll improve her swing the most at this point in time is just growing naturally and getting bigger/stronger.

DFP,
I have a clip of my DD taking a swing of front toss, some things I noticed.
1) Foot gets down when ball is about halfway to the plate. Is this too late? Should it be down sooner (at pitch release)?
2) Hands gets disconnected on the load, back elbow drops before foot is down. Then hands...
Yes, I would prefer getting to real rules sooner as well. Lot of parents here want their kids to dominate 8u coach pitch when I feel they should have just moved up. The stronger kids 8u kids actually risk injuring new players with their batted balls off hot composite bats, trying to hit balls...
Yeah, we live in metro Atlanta so definitely do not need to fly anywhere or do hotel stays.
However having to drive across town during rush hour to attend practice is still very unappealing to me.

Can steal 2nd/3rd
Cannot steal home
No drop 3rd strike
If count reaches 3-0, 3-1, or 4-2, kid pitcher is replace by coach of batting team to finish the at bat, all coach pitched balls are strikes, so no walks.
