    Coaches who never shut up

In 20 years of coaching/instructing I have NEVER EVER raised my voice at a player. When I stop practice it is to teach NOT YELL. I have never said things as lacking in content as “You’ve got to make that play” to a player. I believe in teaching technique and skills. I’ve had plenty of kids and...

Strangest thing an Umpire has said to you?

We were playing a Saturday round robin at our high school diamonds which are on campus next to the road. The ump asks me if he is at the right school. Now there is a large LED sign in back of me welcoming the other teams to our school. I am also wearing a school shirt. The guy did the bases...

    Coaches who never shut up

My favorite Coaches nonsense to struggling pitchers - " Just play catch with (catchers name)" Is that code for throw it down the middle??

    Coaches who never shut up

Our methods of accomplishing similar goals differ. That's a choice ,not criticism.

    Coaches who never shut up

I have no proof other than my eyes and ears that these kids have had little to no instruction on grounders.. Isn't it the coach's responsibility to see that something this basic is corrected rather then reinforced?

    Coaches who never shut up

I arrived a bit early for a U14 TB indoor practice at a indoor facility yesterday and so I watched a first year U12 team finishing up their practice with AC1 hitting grounders, AC2 playing 1B, and AC3 stationed 20 feet behind AC 2. The HC who I happen to know, but just in passing was not...

Need help for indoor practice plan

I used to be guilty of putting times to drills and trying to get in as many drills as breaks would allow. Turns out that practicing that way didn’t make perfect, but it made permanent. Sticking to the schedule didn’t allow for refreshing teaching the proper way to do the activity. I changed the...

Need help for indoor practice plan

90 minutes is too short to do both offense and defense and take breaks. I would suggest concentrating on one or the other because you will be rushing through them to get to the next drill rather than taking the time to make it a teaching moment. To me coach = teacher. When you don’t spend time...

    Roster Size

Depends upon the # of pitchers, catchers, the versatility of the rest of the team, and the amount of games you anticipate playing.

    Coaching difficult players U14

Depends on who tries out. Read the OP again. Instructing at the HC request. Not coaching, Defer to the HC.

    Coaching difficult players U14

I look at this team as at a crossroads. It may be the 2nd year at U14 for some but there are 8 (currently) new players most of which are 1st year U14. The HC is brand new to coaching, so to me this is a 1st year 14U class C team. The HC has chosen to play in 6 tournaments 3 of which are C, 2...

    Coaching difficult players U14

Well at tonight's practice the HC is running a fielding drill while i worked on throwing with 2 players. I don't know what specifically occured but he stopped practice and made it clear that their behavior was unacceptable that he had a lead on 2 players putting the roster at 12 and would put 3...

    Coaching difficult players U14

I tell you, none of these kids would be enough of a leader to be a captain. None.

    Coaching difficult players U14

I believe that almost all of the players one this team have the ability to be average to decent players if they applied themselves. I know it is the coach's job to help the players bring out their talent, I agree with that. However, this is a two way street. I don't claim to work wonders...

    Coaching difficult players U14

First of all thanks for the replies. Let me give you some further details that may be pertinent. The organization that I am helping (and have previously coached for) has mostly competitive TB teams, but also some development teams also, has a decent reputation in the area ( has waived fees...

    Coaching difficult players U14

I am a HS coach, and I volunteer from time to time to help instruct technique with an organization I coached with for many years. This is a U14 team with 4 returning members and 6 new kids. I try and keep it simple so that they don’t immediately tune me out. But it seems like these kids don’t...

    High school softball

If you have a decent AD and enough player interest he could work out a co-op team between interested schools.

    Hitting grounders

Looking at the videos - no pullback, poor posture, both contributing to poor bat path.

    Utilizing the Defense~PITCH OUT's

Seems to set up pretty close to the batter if you go by the warm up pitches and throws to 2nd near the end. In stealing situations, I move the hitters back in the box to make the throw as long and as difficult as possible. I am a fan of pitchouts. Good to see some one else uses it.
