Pitching and Catching same practice glove side injury?

Keep in mind that for a pitcher the glove side shoulder does almost the same thing as the pitching shoulder. My daughter had to have repair/reconstruction on her glove side shoulder, and we had another good friend who did as well. Hopefully it's nothing anywhere near that serious, but don't...

Developing Fastpitch Pitchers: The Speed v Accuracy Debate

After frustrating times at a young age for my dd and looking back on my own experience in baseball pitching, I learned that there is really no speed vs. accuracy debate. Virtually every pitcher throws more strikes at something just short of their max effort. VERY few can really "just slow down...

    Wristbands vs traditional signs

I'll double-down on the color coding different sets of cards. Makes it so much easier to be sure everyone is on the same card with just one glance. I liked to have 4 sets of cards for pitch calling. If most of the numbers repeat on each card you have an almost infinite ability to change...

    Wristbands vs traditional signs

I almost never called out the numbers, just signed with my hand. Much harder for the other team to grab the signs when they don't hear them. There is no need to give a sign to each hitter each pitch, but also make sure you are sometimes giving either dummy signs or giving a number that just...

    College rule flex/pinch runner

Is it possible that player was the DP but had entered the game on defense for another player and was incorrectly listed? I've seen that happen before and whoever is in charge of the broadcast or scoreboard thinks that the player the DP entered for swaps places and becomes the new DP. Or they...

Out of season coach contact rules?

In some areas it depends on how many athletes are involved. So where lessons for one player MIGHT be allowed, practices with 5 or 6 wouldn't. Definitely need clarification from the state athletic governing body.

    Becoming a pitcher only?

I would resist becoming a PO unless it is truly the only part of the game that a girl enjoys. You just never know what may happen and/or what opportunities may open up when a player is as versatile as possible. I certainly wouldn't even consider it until a girl was 16 or older. Just as an...

    Correcting pitcher during game

Nothing wrong with in game correction. In fact, you'd be doing her a disservice if you saw something and didn't help. But, it has to be short and to the point, Things like "stay tall", "arm speed", "push hard". They have to be cues you've worked on in practice, and they have to be easy for...

College rule about getting hit by pitch that is over the plate?

I don't give the batter the benefit of the doubt on these pitches. If it was close to being a strike and you didn't let me see it because you purposefully got in the way, I'm calling it a dead ball strike. If it was strike 3, then it's an out.

UCL grade 2 tear experience or advice

In most areas you'll need to seek out a clinic that specializes to get PRP. So many traditional sports medicine docs won't touch it. There is a peptide called BPC-157 that is worth looking into as well.

    Two Runners on a Base

The runner who legally occupies the base (hasn't advanced to the next base) is safe and the other runner must be tagged out.

    Is crow hopping now legal

Do you happen to have something you could share? I haven't seen any additional clarification recently. I will add that one example we were shown in a training as NOT being a replant was clearly a replant in my opinion.

How to optimize while getting moved around a lot?

Too many players become overly focused on one position. She is so much better off in the long run just becoming a better softball player. Most of the players I coached who went on to play in college were placed in positions other than their "primary" position. As it applies to recruiting...

Side Crunching/Leaning Sideways while Pitching (Posture)

Clearly there is a mechanical issue, but I've seen these types of posture issues before and it is often due to their mindset. Younger girls are often too focused on throwing the ball forwards rather than pulling the ball down. There seems to be a bit of a "syncing" issue with her arms. She...

    Left-handed Pitcher, what say you?

You will certainly hear different opinions, but I was surprised how little it seemed to matter to the girls I coached. In fact, more than once I heard girls comment that they "hadn't noticed" that a pitcher was left handed AFTER they faced her. Where I have seen a lefty gain an advantage at...

    Cost of college and scholarships

I didn't read through all of the replies, but if cost is a major concern then juco is by far the best route. Often get 100% scholarships/aid packages, play quality softball, and possibly raise your value to a D1 or D2 school.

Questions to ask and/or things to know when joining a large "national" team

Maybe someone has mentioned it, but one of my main questions for an elite team would be how many players they carry. Some of these teams carry 18-20 players and playing time can be very disappointing for all but the top few players.

    NCAA Obstruction rule change

I agree that it doesn't give them the ability to obstruct in anticipation of a throw, but almost every obstruction call I've had at home plate has been due to the catcher reacting to an off-line throw and obstructing in the process. I'll be really curious to see more explanation and maybe some...

    NCAA Obstruction rule change

By the logic/wording of this rule it seems that there would/could almost never be an obstruction call on a catcher at home plate as long as there was a throw coming in and they were in position to catch it. I didn't love their rule before but at least it was simple.

    New rule proposal!

Used to love watching pitchers/coaches get frustrated with my dd (slapper) while she fouled off pitch after pitch to stay in an at bat. During one fall league game a coach finally asked her what she wanted to hit. She told him a screwball, which she promptly hit through the 5-6 hole. I think...
