What to do? Excellent question.
I’m guessing that some umpires don’t call it as it could be a combination of “contact is part of the sport” and “I’m not making a call that will eject a player” (and maybe her coach).
Personally, I think out and ejection is the proper penalty. The powers that...
Malicious contact is a rule and call that I think needs some attention.
Especially since it cancels obstruction. Yes, sometimes the throw pulls the defender into the path of the runner and it’s just a train wreck, but I think the call isn’t called enough.
NFHS posted a video about obstruction on a play at the plate.
Umpire called the runner out/no obstruction.
Could a case be made for obstruction/safe? No, the runner did not change their path, but it sure looks like they were impeded.
This ^^^^.
Points of Emphasis are great, provided umpires and coaches emphasize them. Unfortunately, a lot of the time they aren’t.
My own take on why some of my fellow umpires don’t make necessary calls is that from a game management perspective they don’t want to ruffle feathers.
Not...
In my judgement, not illegal.
Here she is just after her hands separate, the start of the pitch;
her pivot foot is still in contact with the pitcher’s plate. I would not consider this an infraction of USA Rule 6A-3-J, which reads “Pushing off with the pivot foot from a place other than the...
In my training, I was taught that working solo my priority is pre-pitch preliminaries and then focus on the pitch (ball or strike). Very difficult to split your attention between feet and the pitch.
I’ve never called a foot infraction working by myself. I’m in season 6, so still early days.
Depending on the rule set umpire mechanics, the plate and base umpire(s) “can” both call any illegal pitch infraction. In practice, though, plate usually has pitch preliminaries and base has the feet.
An exception to that would be a pitching lane infraction, as the plate umpire has the better...
States have the freedom to adopt the NFHS rule or not.
Massachusetts did not adopt the intentional walk change a few years ago, still have to pitch 4 balls to get the batter on first.
50-50 odds that the MIAA adopts this rule change, although umpires have already adopted it here, for the most part . . .
Wondering if USA softball will get rid of pre-game helmet & bat inspection? I’m the rare umpire in MA that still does it, admittedly not all the time. Don’t know if any...
Anyone have experience with the TNT showcase that’s July 4th weekend in PA? Specifically, is the Sunday single elimination for every team or just a select bunch?
Web site states it’s a 6 game guarantee and her team already has 6 games scheduled Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
