I have started working with her doing wall drills against a net to help keep her swing nice and tight.
Most people get too close and it ruins the swing, and worsens bat drag.

Most are bat length away.

You should be bat length, plus forearm length, plus hip radius. IOW, turn hip, then put elbow against hip, extend forearm and bat, to touch fence/net, then add a couple inches.

I played college baseball, and we were always taught bat to chest then add 3-4" to the wall.

I have been having her stay about a bat length plus 6 inches way.

Dew,

I'd just throw her tennis balls/whiffles at 7 y/o (depending on your access to space). And not worry too much.

She does drag it a bit, probably because she's trying to hit it in the air off the tee IMO.

Play catch. Work on throwing. Learn to throw underhand or play catcher(or both at that age). Take flyballs. Take grounders(the right way). Throw her tennis/whiffle balls to hit. All of these things are way better than tee work at 7 y/o.

We do all of that stuff too. She is actually playing on an 8U travel team (which I got roped into managing), so she gets a lot of fielding/throwing reps at practice. She loves catching fly balls.

She also takes pitching lessons once a week.

We live in the middle of nowhere on acreage, so we actually front toss with real balls a fair amount in the yard too.

Of course you were. My son played college as well. Almost every drill in hitting is backwards, or Destructive.

Just look at videos of real hitters and will see the hip is turned (abt 8 in radius), plus the rear elbowis a couple inches from the hip, plus the forearm is extended (12-14in), plus the length of the bat. That's at least a foot farther than what is taught.

When you review videos of people doing fence drills as they are taught, you will see a very contorted swing where the rear elbow travels across the front of the belly.

Always compare what ANYONE tells you to videos of game swings of the best hitters of today.

When hitting an inside pitch, the bat has farther to travel so there is naturally more lag and whip creating more power.the fence drill is designed to hold lag longer. Nothing more. You can do it from a bat length or as close as you can get to the fence wo hitting it. It doesn’t matter.

drag in this young girls swing is not from that. It’s from opening too soon. Right at the start. Her hips are too flat. So she reaches. Learn what move from the middle is.

Her fundamental sequence of movements in her pre-launch phase is good (creating stretch, not gathering all back to push all forward). This, alone, is going to put her ahead of the curve compared to most her age. Keep up the good work, but don't rush it. The road ahead is long.

abaf is what causes a push?

I'm referring to the ABAF pattern commonly seen in young players where they pull everything back, often leaning over the outside of the rear foot, and then push everything forward together. Very often, it's a result of how they interpret ignorant coaches barking "load early". This is a swing pattern that fails to be productive pretty soon in a player's development. My point is that this young player doesn't do this, and that's a good thing. She has better building blocks already in place.

As for Cano, his shift over his rear leg looks like he's ABAF, but he pulls back into his scap as he moves forward, creating stretch prior to launch. This is not what I would consider an ABAF pattern.
