So Cal
I think we've all joked around with our team about having the catcher do a really wimpy "coming down" at the beginning of the game to entice steal attempts.

My kid has been known to sandbag her first throwdown a time or two ;) I get that she loves throwing out runners who dare, but having them not even try is even more effective. unfortunately, there's no stat for "too scared to run" - LOL

I played with a catcher in high school who, (we kept awful stats so maybe there was one or 2?)as far as we could tell, not one team attempted to steal on in the second half of our district play my senior year. Pretty effective!

That includes the defense
1. Being there.
2. Catchng the ball.
3. Applying the tag.
Simply to be clear not just talking about the throw being there.
50% to 80% as a season stat.

Additionally
There are those games when no runner trys to steal :)

First year 12u bigger learning curve for all.
Would say good coaching at practices working often on real situations with pitchers and runners is super helpful.
Even essential!

Lets Throw Runners Out!
Recognize i could have been more descriptive when i posted this.
These are Goals! That include a combination of success.

Thinking through the question of 'catcher stat'
My post includes the defense.
( pattar was poking fun mr. Wisenheimer :) but i was trying to make a further point)

Even tho
Throws at an early age can be spot on. And then continue to be spot on and really fast...

It takes a full combination of these things to be affective.
*All these things are not really reflective of a catchers stats.
*Rather a combination of a defensive stats!
*When all these things come together generally can get half of runners out. Even more.
And imo a stat should be
included in games when
no runner tries to steal.
But its not formulated in.
( mentally catchers notice!!!)

As a Goal throwing out
1 of 2 runners is good!
1 in 10 would be troubling even 2 in ten.
Still there are games where catchers throw out all runners and pick off several runners in a game.

These are the important things to keep a stat on if you want to see improvements~
Late tag
Bobbled catch
No one there
Bad throw
Dropped ball
& of course CATCHERS pop time!

Similar to when a fly ball should be caught but ends up a hit.
Do you note that in the books?
* pop fly?
Stats / books ~ does either of yours have footnotes?

A couple of weekends ago, Maddie was playing 3B in a showcase game. A college coach who is interested in her asked to see her behind the plate, so the coach made the change mid-inning, with a runner on 1B. First pitch, runner goes, Maddie throws a rocket that got there on time, and was caught by the SS who made a quick tag (she's got incredibly fast hands). Ump said she missed the tag. SS is certain she didn't. In the stats, it goes as a SB.

18U comparison:

Club: one catcher throws out 60% of the runners. The other has 0% thrown out.

School ball: Senior catcher, 0%. Junior catcher, also 0%. Yep, we threw out exactly zero runners this season.

Oh, that's fun. My DD successfully throw out zero runners after our stud SS moved to a different city with 2 weeks left to go in the HS season. The girls who played SS after that had trouble getting to 2B soon enough to catch the throw most of the time.

Last spring during my DD's 2nd year at 12u over a 36 game stretch, she had 39 attempts and was caught once. First year of 14u this spring she's had 22 attempts and been caught once. These were USA and USSSA A/B and Open Tournaments. On the other side we're blessed with two great catchers... Id say our main catcher is approaching 25% at throwing out runners.

Our senior catcher developed some strange habit of pulling her mitt early when runners are moving and the ball would drop right in front of her. She did it all season long. Shes a talented catcher and is going to college to play ball but it was pretty frustrating to watch. I'm sure it got the better of her too. DD played lots of sports with her and she was never one to take herself making mistakes lightly. Never got it fixed though.
