I remember 'practicing' slow pitch in the 7th grade. My parents took me to every practice, yet I warmed the bench during the games if I wasn't sent to right field.
In the 10th grade, my cousin begged me to play fastpitch for the school team. I thought she was crazy. I had no skill :) The coach felt he could make me into a pitcher because of my hieght, big hands and willingness to learn. We worked everyday, sometimes twice a day depending on gym class and practice. I became 'ok'. I later played for WVSU in 1996,97. I quit in 97 half way through. Looking back, I kind of wish I would have stayed, but I'm ok with leaving too. Being called 'cocky' by your team mates wasn't something I cherished. I just never threw a fit when I made a mistake. They did. I can't stand it when I see girls throw down their glove when they didn't make that catch. I made mistakes, but as I was taught by my coach in highschool- you learn from them and move on.
Now- I want to help kids learn softball. It helped my self esteem level tremedously. Who knows where I would be at if it weren't for Coach Rawson taking a chance on me. You never know who is on your team- it could be a diamond waiting to be shined and buffed, but if you are always going after the 'trophy' kids- you will never know. Somewhere, there is a kid that needs you. I hope to be a Coach Rawson to someone. My batting skills are out of this world terrible :) But I can pitch :))
