All schools in our JH/HS conference utilize the safety base. DD's HS coaches practice F3 to setup based on two main factors....which side of the foul line the ball is dropped/picked up and what lane the runner has chosen. Then F3 essentially screams "inside" or "outside" so the catcher knows...
DD's first pitching coach would catch a lot of his pitchers during lessons. And caught DD over the first few lessons. Then he asked if I was willing to catch for her so he could start evaluating from the back and side. From then on, I caught for her during lessons up until she decided to stop...
We have a family that uses a version of this in their dual-person pod. It works really well. They of course leave the "doors" somewhat open to allow venting. I've never sat in it, but DD has jumped in between back-to-back games to warm up.
I'll also say layering is key, no matter what you do...
DD plays for a regional TB team, so all but 2 girls are "local". The others have a 1 - 1.5 hour drive to and from practice.
I personally wouldn't go much beyond the 1-1.5 hour drive for a team practice. Luckily, DD also feels this way....which is why we've never pursued a "National" program.
At 10-hours, we likely still drive. If we have to travel on a school day, DD can get her schoolwork up front and work during the drive. Or get it done during downtime at the hotel. At this point, the cost of plane ticket, baggage fee, and rental car rarely meet or beat average cost of gas.
That...
We called the stride leg the "brake" leg. As it's usage at that point is to keep everything except the ball from continuing forward. One mental thought that helped DD was a truck with oranges in the back coming to a stop. The harder and more abrupt the stop, the harder the oranges slammed to the...
I'm no technical expert. I'm just a Dad. I've listened. I've read. I've learned to pitch myself while helping my DD during her journey. I am a huge huge fan of K.I.S.S. And have been lucky to have had some very smart Pitching Coaches aid my daughter.
Here is my $0.02.
1st - LOVE the pitching...
My DD has always been a corners kid. Travel ball she's at 3B. School ball she is at 1B (lately was used at 2B). She's a gun slinger and not afraid to throw the ball.
1. Fielding Fielding Fielding. Spend time working on her timing. Slow hits, hard hits, short hops, long hops. Timing, rhythm and...
Not a coach, but my DD has been attending her school's "Open Fields" since Jr High (and now finishing her Sophomore year). The HS coaches are also the JH coaches. Having watched a few (and talking with DD), they're low-key but offer the girls an opportunity to work on fundamentals. Nothing crazy...
That would get the heart pumping for sure! My Dad was a private-pilot instructor when I was young. He taught my brother and I how to fly single engine planes. I can't imagine the sound or feeling that a prop hitting a deer would cause, even in a twin engine. Yikes. At least it was during landing...
Some may not like this, but these helped DD with the "feel". Because, like many, she often would release around the ball (creating bullet spin) rather than palm-forward with fingers pushing "through" the ball [towards the target] which helps create the 12-6 spin. She was taught to achieve drop...
We do similar. It's not terribly hard to cover a cooler in a wagon with a bunch of the other stuff we haul in (canopy, chairs, etc.). I've only had a couple tournaments ask to "inspect" my wagon. But I've not had anyone hold their ground on the no-coolers rule whenever it's been 95+ and all I...
