Personally I think outside of OU the last few years, if you truly cruise at 70 and have a good rise you will be able to handle 3/4 of P5 hitters. How many kids actually cruise at 70 in D1 right now? I’ll give you Fouts. Faraimo? Anybody else?

Once these HS pitchers that
claim they’re a few mph from 70 in the Extra Innings ranking get to college I’m sure we will have a bunch of them!

I think Fouts has less movement than some but considerably more speed. She's one I believe cruises above 70. Of course, she's about 10' away from the plate on release with her gigantic stride, so the ball doesn't have time to break.

Fouts throws bullet spin so not as much movement someone who throws a true 12-6 spin. In effect her rise doesn't seem to 'rise' as much. Matter of fact she doesn't even claim to throw a rise, just a hard fastball up. The fact that she doesn't have a lot of movement with her pitches is why better hitting teams have started hitting her. They've figured out when to swing and when not to. And better hitters will hit you no matter how fast if the ball is flat. Same the in with Team USA. You aren't going to blow the ball by Japan and others and she got hit quite a bit there as well.

Fouts usually throws 67 or 68. When she really cranks it up maybe 69. She herself has said she rarely throws harder then that and when she does she's overthrowing and the spin rate drops even more. And when you throw bullet spin the balls not going to move anywhere.

So we went from being crushed by P5 teams to better hitting P5 players and Team Japan? I mean Tony Gwynn hit .415 against Maddux so I guess that proves that movement doesn’t matter much..

Yeah well the guy I responded to said 70 without good movement was BP for P5 teams……

Riddle me this boy wonder; what is her ERA excluding 2020? Her HR per inning is going up too. How about walks? Teams are figuring her out and adjusting because she lacks movement.

And please highlight where I said it was BP? And show me where you've actually seen ANY college pitcher average 70?

I know you can't help yourself.

Hey..you don’t have me blocked after all.

You said “tee off” on 70 did you not..sounds like the same as BP to me.

Also if nobody cruises at 70 how would you know if they would tee off?

Is is hard to be a tool or were you just born one? Way to pick the outlier. Being a college professor I'd thing you'd know statistics. There was one Tony Gwynn, and Maddox did quite well against the rest of MLB.

One again man up and show where I said crushed? There are a lot more hitters hitting Fouts now than before. Fouts has not as well against better hitting teams in the last few years then when she got to Bama; the better teams are figuring her out. Compare her ERA to others this year and ther are quite a few better.

And you can look at your beloved OU program the pitchers that did the best against them didn't have pitchers with blazing speed but were able to move the ball Morgan Day beat them and she doesn't throw anywhere close to 70 but has great movement.

Way to pick the outlier.
lol..that was the point.

I never said movement was not important. My contention was made in Post 71 and the fact that you said Fouts doesn’t cruise at 70 basically means that you cannot really use her to argue against that contention.

I would argue her lack of success was not that teams figured her out since their scouts saw what she did in two prior years. I would say it's more likely she was overused in 22 versus 19 and 21. You had Crystal Goodman and Sarah Cornell, the SEC pitcher of the year, to help shoulder the burden. Last year, Murphy had Kilfoyle, when she wasn't hurt, but didn't use her a lot. Fouts was cooked by the end of the season and was flat.

I would assume by bullet spin you mean a true clockwise rotation, correct? Almost the way a rifled bullet spins out of the barrel. How would one get that spin on a softball?

So teams/hitters cannot "figure out" spinners? Do they have a special magic decoder key that nobody else has?
