If I am reading the USSSA age calculator right, 19yr olds are eligible to play in 18U.

In my case, I have 4 players with 2004 birthdays who really want to come back as guest players NEXT summer in 2023. In Summer of 2023, they will be 19 years old and looks like they are eligible to play 18U.

Anyone have any experience with this situation? Did the 19 yr olds enjoy coming back for their last harrah? Did anyone complain about their participating?

Lastly how did you insure them to meet USSSA requirements? My team youth insurance covers up to age 18.

Appreciate any advice you can give.

No help on insurance, but not sure why people would complain, other than some people like to complain....

2004 birthdays are 18u eligible. You could have 15 players born January 1st, 2004, and have a 18u team.

Thanks. There was tournament we played a few weeks ago where the winning team played three 19 yr olds and they were D1 and D3 college players home for the summer.

As you can imagine there were many complaints about that.

I wont be that lucky. My 19yr olds may not even play in college... they just want to hang out with their old teammates. :)

18U should be 18 or under. USSSA and USA/ASA Bollinger will offer adult insurance but it is expensive with a high deductible.

Wait till you start 18+/23U...There are a lot of TD directors that have no idea about the adult game and run 18+/23U events as they do youth events.
If the event is truly sanctioned USSSA 18U the TD has to be deciding on his own to allow 19 year old's to play. I would think the coverage that they provided when enrolling into college / parents insurance card would be sufficient though.
Check out the USSSA site and see if the TD actually reported the event. You can then see rosters and ages. https://usssa.com/fastpitch/

I checked the USSSA age chart multiple times. In 2023, 2004 birthdays are considered to have a "competition age" of 18.

I have an email out to the state director to confirm. Will keep you posted.

I cant be the first person to ask about insurance coverage for 19 yr olds.

what is players actual age as of this coming Dec 31st? If it is 18, they are 18u eligible for 22-23 season. IE 2004 birth year.

Same with all age groups, 12 on Dec 31 = 12u, etc.

Really not that difficult..

and yes, if said 18u player turns 19 on say 1 Feb, she plays that summer as a 19 year old, likely college freshman. Complainers can get out.

18U is 18 or under, but the date for deciding that is December 31st. Anyone born in 2004 or after can play 18u. The TD isn't deciding anything on their own. A player could be born January 1st, 2004, and play 8 months of 18u as a 19 year old. A player born Sept 1st, 2004 could be on the same team and never play 18u as a 19 year old. Our team just finished the last 16u season. Had a player with a January birthday that was 17 for all the summer tournaments. Same thing.

Only issue I could see people being upset about is a team full of girls playing in college showing up at a USSSA B or C tournament and rolling everyone. But that's a classification issue, not 18 or 19 years old issue.

My guess is being college players was more of the issue, especially if this tournament was not filled with future college players.

Well TBH a lot of the high level & national tournaments specifically state in their tournament rules no college players allowed. I would think the local or regional tournaments probably don't have the rule so that's where the players home for the summer who want to play with friends would go, right?
