Not Covid - it is cost. They are doing 2,000 games and they need announcers to call lots of games per day. Some of these commentators are doing 3-4 games from the studio. They are also using a lot of local camera crews at games especially the ones on ESPN+

Michelle Smith I believe gave the old 'tie goes to the runner' myth last game I watched. That just isn't true. And she is still saying 'late break on that pitch' which is clearly BS.

Also they can stop pretending that the pitch speeds that are showing on most games are right.
Who does the tie go to? Is it the defense?

That old thread should be fun to read through...
My restart of the 2022 version was totally lame.

I‘m thankful y’all are bailing me out on this one!

I do think the broadcasts keep improving, I also hope some of this tacky stuff doesn’t become ingrained…

Also I watched a game last week and was shocked how much they talked about pre-college rankings. Those rankings are spectacularly irrelevant! None of that matters when those players are digging into the batters box against a 20some year old fifth year pitcher….

Just Google baseball myths "tie goes to the runner". There are good education articles, philosophy debates and direct quotes of the rules that pertain to outs, base running, etc. There has never been a rule that says "Tie goes to the runner".

So by now most of us have watched some televised softball. What things can college announcers quit saying? What are you tired of hearing? What do you really like?
Announcers shouldn't comment on rules. Sadly, they are wrong so many times and make it worse for the viewer/listener.
They should tone down their bias toward "Their Team".

This applies to a D3 college streaming last weekend. Friday DH, there was no play by play but we could her the game announcer and all the stupid music and sound effects. It was maddening along with the guys voice. It sounded cartoonish. Then Saturday's play by play was even worse. He never shut up and blabbed incesistanly. He kept saying the same stuff over and over. There was absolutely no dead space, if there was he would make sure to say stuff that meant nothing. Shut up and let us watch the game! Less is More! I was about to have an anxiety attack.

I would like to hear stuff about the local community and what makes your town interesting. An experience at a local restaurant. An interaction with a local grandpa. Tell us about the school for half of the viewers who are the visiting team. Also, announcers that have no clue about softball and try to translate from the baseball background. And in all reality they never played baseball in real life.

There is no such thing as a tie: either the ball got there before the runner or it didn't. That may sound like splitting hairs, but that is how it is written and also how you are supposed to be taught to call it.

The idea of a tie is removed because the umpire is not looking for it and 'a tie' is not defined in the book as a tie. There is no such 'tie' rule or directive. And if you call it a tie it is totally a cop-out from making the decision you are meant to be making.

The rules reads "[various ways to make a force] before the runner reaches the base."; that is the criteria you need to meet for an out.

The correct way to say it would be "the defense failed to get the force before the runner reached the base"

Had an umpire tell me once: "There is no rule for tie goes to the runner. Tie goes to the umpire! It's my decision, safe or out."

I thought that was and still is the smartest thing an umpire has ever told me.
Too bad they were wrong

The fact that the ball has to arrive before you reach base to be out does in fact mean a tie goes to the runner. While technically there is never a tie if you timed it down to an 5 decimal places there certainly are times when human perception can't tell the difference makes it a de facto tie.

Yes but who does the tie go to? It has to go to someone,we don’t do a do over. If not the runner are you saying it goes to the defense?
