Bailey is not fast but she's not hitting grounders through the infield. Where she hits them she has continued to get multiple base hits. Team USA has one big bopper in Bubba. They haven't figured out the era of one run games in the Olympics is over. Japan was beating the same teams USA played and were beating them buy five and six runs, and USA was winning 1-0.

It's sad to see them sticking with the small ball philosophy that Erickson had that never worked out.

Also can't you use the DP Flex in international softball? If so, problem solved.

And as an aside Bailey has great plate discipline which there wasn't a lot of in thr Olympics.

Not sure why you responded to me..I wasn’t arguing for continuing with the status quo. They should have taken either Alo or Hemphill IMO.

I was saying it tongue in cheek, but that didn't come across very well. I'm actually not surprised Bates didn't make the team, and I also don't know that adding her would actually solve their problems anyway.
They probably have about 10 years to solve their (Olympic) problems anyway...lol. Maybe they need to continue to lose to Japan in International events to finally figure out that they are not utilizing the advantage they have over Japan..

I wonder if what would help is not having the coaches pick their teams. There's a reason there are very few coaches/managers who also acquire the talent in major professional sports. A great coach or manager is not necessarily a great team builder or talent evaluator.

As a coach who is much better at the talent evaluation aspect than the actual coaching of skills, I see them as very different qualities. Team USA doesn't seem to have too many (or any) good GM types involved.

Fair point...although all of these coaches build (good) College teams 🤷‍♂️ .

I am curious if they chose Gasso (I assume she didn't want it..) would she build the team like (or at least put more emphasis on slugging) she has in the recent past or would she revert back to what everybody else has done.

That's true about building the college teams, but somehow that feels different. I just can't figure out if building a team through recruiting requires a different skill set than building a team through a best-of-the-best tryout process.
