I understand both sides of what you guys are saying about the US. Things here could be much better (I work for a school system as well) buuuuuuut…. In some countries neighborhoods like our poor, impoverished areas are the best it gets.
Back to softball and cost specifically, I will say this: travel ball and regular private lessons that many here on thos site seem to think is normal is cost prohibitive to far more kids than most here would ever think, I would dare say the vast majority of the kids in the us. If you were to look at household income of the highest level players, then compare that to average income it has to be well above average.
Only in America can you get a free phone, internet, and housing and be considered impoverished. Mariano Rivera grew up playing with a piece of cardboard because they could not afford a glove

That being said, there's no money in softball like there is in the youth basketball circuit to cover traveling costs. And there's a much bigger roster for softball.

I'm not sure how a "free phone, free internet, and free housing" provide food on the table, emotional and social stability, adequate healthcare, and equitable education ... but OK.

Hopefully they made Rivera pay for that cardboard. We wouldn't want the wrong people getting ahead.

I have no familiarity with youth basketball but I can believe that. Basketball covers boys, too.

Good game last night, classic low run game. Abbott is a beast.

I was shouting at the TV when the 3rd base coach sent the Canadian runner home with nobody out. The cut off literally had the ball in her glove before she rounded the base. Brutal decision.

I fully understand why there's no fans. I fully understand why they are playing on a lack luster baseball field that isn't pleasing to the eye. I do NOT understand why they changed the format of the tournament to only 1 game vs. each opponent then into the medal games. To me, that shows they softball seems to be an after thought to whomever changed the tournament. I realize it's the Olympics and every game should matter but, sometimes neat things happen in bracket play when it's do or die games.

I can understand your desire to have a run-of-the-mill double-elimination bracket tournament, but I really like the round-robin format. This way you get to see every team. Especially when you are trying to bring the game back, playing every team is great to get eyes on you. Maybe by the end you might have some statistically insignificant games, but the way I see it, they all matter, "No games off."

How many times have you heard a coach say "Well, we lost, but earlier we beat the team that beat the team that won, so we should have won the whole thing!" None of that here, you play everybody!

I'm not suggesting a 6 team double elim. But the format changed from 2008 to this year. Currently, 2 of the 6 teams will have traveled around the world to play 5 games. The others get 1 more. 6 games, for all that money... all that time training. I'm all for the RR, but maybe a double RR before the top 2 are announced? I don't know. I just think 5 or 6 games is small.
