Lefty catcher, here! In a lot of aspects of the position, it's not a whole lot different from being a righty. There are a few throws that are harder for me to make and there are some throws that are harder for me to catch as well as some tags harder for me to make. My favorite play is catching a runner sleeping at first.

And honestly, I think the reason there aren't more in softball is simply because lefties are such a small subset of the general population.
Sure that is part of it but it is also that a majority of young girls are introduced to the sport, and coached, by a male who played baseball…

I definitely think that "baseball mindset" is an issue with a lot of softball coaches, but that is a topic for another day. :censored:

I agree with you. However, I'm a baseball guy and never really had an issue with lefty catchers. Just didn't come across them much. If the player is capable, I'm not going to hold them back because of the hand they throw with.

Perhaps some bb reasoning to leftys playing other than catcher position like first becomming more of a priority in bb.

BB Pick offs at first base are received at a different angle/trajectory from pitcher.
Than picks offs at first in fastpitch, ball thrown from catcher.

BB glove on right hand at firstbase, facing pitcher, is a sweep tag to base.
While defense can stand out of the runners way.

In fastpitch glove on left hand at first base is a sweep tag to the base. Facing catcher standing just in front of base path lane. Out of runners path.

I saw an article talking about this a little while back but was from a baseball perspective and the main reason doesn't apply to softball. The reason they had was that if the lefty had a good enough arm to be a catcher, he should probably be pitching. With the number of pitchers needed for baseball and the lack of left handed pitchers I get it. The mind set probably got carried over to softball.
