Kirk Gibson one said that as a manager it was his job to know the rules as well as the ump. He would study sections of the rule book during the season to refresh his memory. His thought was as the manager he might have an opportunity to win a game by his knowledge of the rules and it was his responsibility to do so.

Trying to follow up on everyones questions/comments. Thank you everyone for your help.
@mmeece Details have gotten a bit fuzzy since then but I'm confident the runner had lead off from 2B on the next pitch and the catcher had thrown the ball back to pitcher in circle she's walking towards 2B to prepare for the next pitch, not to throw runner out, and I think since the runner saw the ball go that way and not towards 2B she left. This is where I got confused, i felt (hence the start of the thread) that NFHS 8-7-2 she is allowed one direction at her own risk in the above scenario
@The Man In Blue no rule books provided but we do have specific 12U Rec rules spelled out for our league and otherwise according to our BB/SB president we are under NFHS. I bought the 2020 NFHS version through Apple on April 30 this year

I do try to look up rule situations to learn the intricacies after the game after an exciting play/event has happened during that game. It's one thing to read the rules, it's another to experience and review what may/should have been called and learn from it.

Had it messed up again at another huge tournament. This time runner on 2nd. Batter hits a hard ground ball 3rd base bobbles it and batter beats it out to first. Runner advances to third. Runner literally strolls around first base heading to second trying to induce the throw. First baseman walks the ball toward the circle. Umpire calls her out...coach asks to talk pointing out that the pitcher didn't even have the ball. Umpires realized their mistake but because they had stopped the play had to return runners to the corners. Why oh why is this rule sooo hard. Its a designed play. Nobody runs it better than our organization. Again these umpires were excellent overall. I'm blaming it on the heat. It's over 100 and everyone is a little wonky.

If there is something like this that you run, seek out an umpire before the plate meeting and give them a heads-up. That way 1) They know it when they see it and aren't blind-sided. 2) YOU know that your interpretation of the rule coincides with the umpires' and they will rule as you are expecting them to. If there is a difference of opinion, you know not to run that play on this particular day.

If I write an equation wrong on the board and a kid shows me the textbook and I made a mistake I don’t kick him out of class...just sayin 😉

That is because you are being paid to teach them, you COULD be using the the old 'readership test' wherein the billboard company has a horendus mispeling on the bill board. When the customer calls and says "Hey some guy just came in and told me about the mistake on the billboard out on Route 33" the billboard guy says, "Yep I know and this shows you people read the billboard".

If a coach truly feels an umpire has a rule applied incorrectly AND either doesn't confer with partner or they two (or three) of them are still misapplying a rule, then the solution is a protest. It is NOT showing up the umpire by pulling out the rule book. IF a crew truly isn't sure and none of them has a copy of the book available, then you might suggest they look through the copy you conveniently have in the dugout.
