It happens. She lost focus. Kind of like when a football player drops the ball before getting into the end zone.

In 9U (yes 9U!) DD was playing a very tough local team. Bases loaded, 2 outs, 3-2 count, and our hitter puts it over a 200' 8' high fence into the wind. No joke. It was amazing. Of course there was a HUGE celebration at home plate. When they went into the dugout, opposing parents chirping she missed home plate. After an appeal she was called out. Being the team photographer, I caught the action and there was no way after I pulled up my photos. When I politely asked the ump after the game, he said he couldn't see her touch it through all the kids so he called her out. I was like, ??? And what parents in their right mind take an OTF grand slam away from a 9 year old? DD team went on to win the game, but that left a bad taste in my mouth for that ump and opposing team's parents (who we battled for years after...and the coach was a great guy too).

Not necessarily a bad answer provided that the umpire was watching for it, had reasonable reason to believe she might've missed it and then couldn't verify because of the crowd blocking his view. But yeah, that's a shame that her great moment was tainted. As far as the parents, many of them probably regret it later, but in the heat of the moment, the adults forget that it's not about them but the kids. And that's a good swat for a 9-year-old, wind or not.

For some players that are used to hitting 20 HR's a season, I could see this happening. For those that hit a few a year, I am sure they are gonna make sure they touch that plate.

4 things:
1) Gasso more than likely doesn’t pull Juarez if that is a playoff game
2) Not sure I have seen too many coaches pitch around a batter and put the tying run on 2nd regardless of how big the disparity in the hitter in the box and on-deck circle
3) While it “worked” (eg she was safe) why is the Georgia coach stealing 3rd with 2 outs late in the game and down by a run?
4) While they have never hit this well early in the season, OU has done this in the past. Feast on out of conference (and conference for that matter) pitching only to come back to earth once they get the WCWS. How well they do when it counts will ultimately come down to how effective Juarez is. IMO Saile is too wild to trust in the WCWS.
I think that's a difference between baseball and softball in that you can't rely on one arm.

I think softball coaches understand that once they hit the regionals, they will need more than 1 arm. A couple of years ago, Florida State relied heavily on Burroughs to win the WCSWS, but they wouldn't have been there without Kylee Hanson's help.

Of course, but unless you are Kevin Cash, in the playoffs you typically don't remove a pitcher who is doing just fine just to get some
innings for another kid...
