Not to be argumentative, and I may be biased since DD chose any Ivy League school over Patriot League Schools but I would contend "value" is an opinion and varies significantly based upon personal circumstances. We "valued" the Ivy league education more highly than the lower cost of the Patriot League school but I understand that equation won't yield the same result for everyone. Glad you and your DD found the school that met your needs and hope all of the DFPers can do the same in this incredibly challenging recruiting environment.
Obviously, value is in the eye of the beholder but I merely meant that the Patriot League schools offered more scholarships for those not qualified for need based financial aid.

At the end of the day it depends upon the major and neither the Ivies nor the Patriot League schools are in the top 5 computer science programs.

So to each their own and as always, YMMV. 😉

It's been a very long rollercoaster ride over the years, but FINALLY all of the hard work and thousands of hours, dollars, and miles paid off!

Thanks to all the coaches and parent volunteers along the way who helped to make our daughter's dream come true to play DI softball!

To all the other girls out there that are still in the NCAA recruiting grind (esp. 2021s!), keep working harder than everyone else, and keep the faith!

Alex Anderson Commits to GMU
ATTTTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAA GIRL!!!!!!!!! Congrats and go do amazing things on and off the field!!!!! You got this Alex!!!!!

great to hear all these stories and girls finding homes that are not just softball based. at the end of the day it education we all want as parents for our kids. my daughters teammate is in fact going to mason as well. and one of her friends brothers is a senior there now and has nothing but positive things to sAY...could not be happier for your kid as well as others in the grind. hopefully this will be part of the lessons learned for when they are parents themselves. coaches moving and leaving is nothing new but I'm sure lack of funds and covid effects do not make it any easier for them to make a living let alone run a program with kids staying extra year, transferring from other schools bc of log jams etc.. when people ask about the so called scholarship she has earned I politely tell them even if it is a full ride which it isn't I would still be in the red when you add up travel, lost work ( I work for myself ), lessons hitting fielding speed and agility, gear, swag and cost fo team.. the fact her scholarship makes it less than a state school would cost me I'm good. money was put aside for her well before she was going to be a softball player. to me the team aspect gives her instant identity and group of friends with common bond and desires vs the sorority trying to prove and impress girls to accept you , also at the higher division levels the mandatory study hall and tutoring can only help my daughter with a more set regimen. congrats to your daughter as well as all others who have found a home and to those still looking and grinding keep at it , this a national issue and these girls are mostly in the same boat ... my dad always says " there is an rear for every seat " just have the find the one thats most comfy for your bottom! happy new year and healthy one to all
Very well said and many thanks for the kind words! We've definitely spent more on softball over the years then we will be paying college, but at the end of the day, Lord-willing she will have achieved her dream of playing DI and graduating with an excellent computer science degree making $80K-$100K debt free with an outstanding future lined up.

Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thanks and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

My sincere congratulations to you and your daughter (and tying this in to an old conversion (message #19) from a couple of years ago, I'm very pleased to welcome her to the land of the unicorns!).

P.S. - Can safely report that my daughter will graduate this June with 2 degrees (in 4 years!)- a BS in Computer Science and a second BS in applied mathematics. I'm sure she'd tell your daughter that getting a CS degree and playing ball can be done - the years of hard study will be well worth it...

She is a catcher (1st base secondary position). Lefty for both hitting and throwing. Yes, she did Headfirst in summer of 2019; was signed up for 2020, but that got shut down of course. She is in contact with several coaches in those conferences and they like her (have said she's at the top of the 2022 recruiting list). No offers as of yet, but I do know that these schools make offers later than many others.

For now, she's just concentrating on keeping grades up and will take ACT again in Feb. If she can bump from 28 to 30, I think it would open doors. And, being in the South, we'll be playing travel ball again starting mid-Feb (travel to FL for that).
Hi CMMom1740,

My DD's looking into Headfirst Honor Roll camp. How was your DD's experience at the camp? Was she able to showcase her skills as both catcher and 1B?

Hi CMMom1740,

She really liked it a lot and it truly did help her get on several coaches' radar. It was long, but there was a lot of individual attention and a chance for the coaches to rotate around and get a good look at everyone. I am not certain about how much time she got to do at 1B; we had her fly up to NY and stay with a softball friend also doing the camp, so I was not there. But I think there was enough time that they got to do at least a little bit at their secondary positions.

It is expensive, but I really feel it's worth the $$$ if you're interested in these type of schools. Certainly much more bang for your buck than at the cattle call camps with 200-300 kids and no individual attention. She will go back in summer this year if a) COVID doesn't cancel it again and b) she hasn't verballed anywhere by that point.

Congratulations! Very nice article. Always stressful when a coach you've built a relationship with quits. Looks like the new coach knows talent! Well Done!
