Get RAD Catching Workout
Call this "our 5 n 5's"
Can be done with or without a ball.
Will show both!

5x each mechanic
Front x5
Left side x5
Right side x5
Each 5x set is done back to back,
Adding next mechanic/skill.
Can see the skills stacking as workout progesses.

First Workout (without ball)
is a mechanic workout focussing on
Correct technique
developing muscle memory.

Second Workout (with ball)
Adds technical glovework
With transition.

*throwing s.b. from about 10 feet away
= quick reaction time.
*average pace is about 20 minutes for 1 workout.
15 minutes with hussle. ;)
*doing it with correct mechanics is first goal.
developing speed at it ultimate goal !
*also train using these mechanics throwing at a target.

Special THANK YOU
To student Natalya Rodriguez 17yr old 2021 and her Mom
Contributing their effort, time,
and video skills to document this for me.
ENJOY 👍

Rad,

What’s the purpose of the drill at 1:10? She’s reaching down but not dropping to her knees.

Thanks.

Appreciate your inquiry.

That is Post Pick.
Athletic position moving body to the sides.
Stimulates footwork
and
Muscle memory.
Pick up foot, Push with other leg.
Repeat.

Add glove work snapping
And pick
(transition movement ball out of glove )
Can do both from
Athletic or Catching position.

______________
Can field dirt pitches, no knee's, and throw from feet also.
( that may open a can of worms :) )

Rad- Why not use backhand during drills?

Rad- Why not use backhand during drills?
While there is that choice,
Prefer Not.

Turning our glove under can be to frame a low pitch.
Then also used for dirt pitches.
Prefer Turning under for consistant glove work.
Frame or dirt pitch.

Also want to encourage getting body as far over behind the ball. To then use posture and glove range.
To set us up best for our throw.

Not encouraging reaching.
*exception extreme beyond getting behind.

Here is a video showing mechanics with throws.
Has other training and drills also.

RAD...any specific drill or teaching cue to stop a catcher from reaching too much or relying too much on it and not blocking the ball?

My daughters biggest "bad habit" so to speak is she reaches on balls coming in straight but low and tries to pick them out front instead of getting to knees and blocking or at least have her glove turned under (like your catcher in videos).

In trying to reach..she gets some but some also hit right outside her reach of her glove and they bounce and shoot up her arm like a ramp. 😲

We do tons of different reaction drills but its just a bad habit she has a tough time stopping.

Great question!
How old? Guessing under 12 yrs?

This sounds like executive brain learning the ball, depth, with our range.
ALSO glove mechanics!
( ball shoots up arm like a ramp...call that rollar coaster)
Learn to make the cave.
Pull wrist back turn glove into dirt.
(Not flat on ground.)
Snap make the cave
Snap make the cave
Repeat.
Call this ' glove speed'.

In the video there is a segment in the beginning catcher on knees doing glove work., turning/snapping glove in the dirt. Make the cave.
Part of this is holding athletic posture (on knees) the other is where the glove moves to.

*put a ball on the ground
5" in front
(under chest not between knees)
Then 8", 10", 12",15"... 20"....out front.
On knee's, Hold posture and snap to these distances.
Glove speed with range!
Do this center, left/right sides.

Do a few each distance.
Move ball out further.
There will be 'glove range'
and can find the limit where glove starts reaching,
( or rather pointing forward)
Not able to make the cave.
This helps learning our 'Glove Range)
That finds the limit.

In video
When we introduce the ball in drills.
Catcher is on her knees.
Now throwing dirt pitches.
Same drills
Brain now focussing on moving ball coming in.
Takes practice and reps.
My bucket has 25 balls.
That = one set. On that drill work. We may do 3 sets. Great quick repetition work!
Train accordingly to time you have and goals!

Best thing about training mechanics is
We can train our body by ourselves!
*Without a ball flying at us.
Breaking down each movement.
Then stack next movement together.
*Muscle memory essential first!
Body gets used to it and can learn to perform naturally.
( without detailed thinking)

Add moving ball
Still on knees~
Is focussing now on moving depth element, training timing and reading the ball.
Since body has already trained knowing range and limit, this should stay consistent with muscle memory work already done.

Then do same drill work starting from catching position with feet kick to knees.
Do ball on dirt first
5", 10", 15" out = learn range.
Then throw dirt pitches.

Question relates also to...
Similar to hard hit grounders where we dont have time to move in, or need to play a bounce, or receive a short hop throw.
Learning to step a little or a lot.
Similar skill sets!
Perhaps from fielding we learn charge grounder, that instinct is great to go to the ball.

Catching is also learn how to hold our ground ball coming into us. Learn what our athletic posture can do knees or feet,
To use our glove!

*Remember our posture on our knees has a lot to offer if we keep it athletic, a strong tushie up chest forward, inables our glove range.
( squishy weight back limits glove range. If torso is back, means shoulders are back )

Appreciate the inquiry!

Thanks a ton RAD!! Appreciate it.

Yes, just turned 12 a couple months ago. We do similar drills from watching your videos online and will definitely incorporate ones in that video. But I definitely think we don't do it enough x per week.

I agree 100% on muscle memory. Much of my background is in kinesiology and sport specific training and muscle memory is so crucial to overcome/override initial bad habits/movements. I think her reactions to balls in dirt are in that in between stage of reach or block and "block" hasn't quite overcome "reach" yet. Lol 😀 Sometimes she does...sometimes she doesn't.

Ill try and post a pic of her hand/body position as well. When she reaches her glove hand (shes a lefty) stays as it is but just extends her arm out to try and catch the ball right as it hits the dirt. She doesn't flip her glove over palm up. Just out and to the ball. But every now and then she'll miss by an inch or two and the ball will ricochet up the back of her right forearm and shoulder.

In her mind she thinks she can "pick it" right off the dirt (which isn't always a bad thought) but will miss on some. Hasn't quite learned "What can I get and what I can't" yet.

Like the glove range aspect.
As we learn to read the ball comming to us,
We can grow that technical skill to interpret
'cutting the ball off'

1. Get glove behind the short hop to cut off the bounce and/or spin.

2. Cut off the angle befor it gets to the side.

3. Play the ball, dont let the ball play us!

Look forward to video! 👍
