We left for the tournament really early, but this view was worth it

So Cal
I will never forget showing up early once Saturday morning for warm ups before the sun came up and the grounds crew did not show up to turn on the lights, so we sat in the parking lot for an hour waiting until it was light enough to warm up...good times!

Been there. Done that.

I'm right here.
Lol! Way to ruin it TJ! JK

Sorry...Couldn't let it slide! (lol). Like many many others on this site, I would leave work to mow the outfield, groom the infield and line everything well in advance of anyone showing up...and it always looked perfect and beautiful. And as with everyone else, we always did our best to make sure every measurement was exact and the correctly lined, the way its supposed to be. We all take pride in it, so errors in line markings are very easy to notice...and have earned a comment from the peanut gallery!

What am I missing here? Is it the absence of a catcher's box?

On a properly laid-out softball field, the foul lines do not intersect the batter's box at the corner. When this occurs (like in the pic), it means the dimensions of the box are incorrect.

I had to look this up. Almost every image of a softball field on google has it wrong (like the OP pic.)

Hmmm...Maybe I'm wrong. I was always under the belief that the foul lines should intersect the batters box slightly behind the corner. If I'm wrong about that, I don't know what the issue is that TJ mentioned.

I don't think you're wrong, based on diagrams of batter's boxes. But it seems that most fields, even at high levels, have lines that meet at the corners. Maybe there is some wiggle room for size of batter's box, or where it starts, which would affect where the lines intersect. With the new rules and the adverse affect on slappers, I would think colleges would be trying to get this right.

I was looking at the beauty of the sunrise over an unspoiled field. I remember playing at Twin Creek in Woodstock, Ga in I guess my DD's 1st year of 12's. Arrive at the park for a 0800 game and there was frost on the field as the sun came up. Beautiful but cold as crap. ANother good one is having the first game at the Summit in Chattanooga especially in the fall with fog in the hills around the park.
