Once on the Team, Always on the Team?

A lot of teams are part of non-profit organizations , and many of the NPF's have bylaws that require competitive selection (tryouts). Of course, most of the tryouts are done with a wink and nod as 8-10 spots are known before the tryouts, so it can be a farce for most of the people thinking they...

    Scoring question.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but if the batter hits second, has for all intents and purposes a double under any other scenario, why wouldn't this be a double? Is it because where the batter ends up is irrelevant if the runner on 2 is the winning run? I want to get this right, but am still...

    Scoring question.

Everyone who said 5-2, assuming every runner touched home, is right. Anything in the field is 3-2 final and could be single or double depending on which base the hitter touched before the winning run scored.

    Little Pitcher

If she is little and slower than most, you're going to find coaches who won't believe in her. I've seen it firsthand, some can get past the height, some can get past the fact that the changeup/hitting the spots is more important than the fastball, but good luck finding someone who will give her...

    The "Hissy-Quit"

I don't disagree with etiher of you. I hate this part of the game and wish it weren't allowed and encouraged.

    The "Hissy-Quit"

Great thread. Pattar, respect, you owned your conduct, water under the bridge now (pun intended). I have only seen a parent take their kid off the bench and leave in the middle of a game once. The parent was upset that his kid wasn't in the lineup in a pool game but everyone else was...

What is appropriate for a parent to discuss with a head coach?

Anything about the schedule is fair game. Anything about recommendations for lessons or skill development outside of practice is generally ok. Beyond that, I'd stay away from questions unless they involve something outside of softball.

    Tis the season

As you wish. Sorry I thought it was obvious that I was responding to you. This is a message board, we all have opinions, if you don't like mine you can always ignore or give us your opinion. For what it's worth, I never felt bad in the first instance, thus, I feel the same before or after.

    Do you?

    Tis the season

Where teams that qualify for national tournaments play people who didn't help the team qualify over those who did; when the same teams will start complaining of lack of loyalty amongst players and parents who search for new opportunities on different teams, where hopefully the same thing won't...

ASA Nationals - Experience (bunch of questions)

USA softball does it right, the pool games do mean something as it determines seeding for the double elimination part of the tournament. PGF, no so much. Playing two drop dead pool games that don't mean anything may get more kids to play, but everyone is smart enough to know that if a kid is...

    Errors Vs Effort

I'm with canyonjoe, these sound like hits to me unless you are playing elite level ball at a higher age. The first sounds like poor judgment at worst, whic his by definition a hit. The second sounds like either poor judgment or a hop that just ate her up. I understand the argument of calling it...

Biological Male Wins NCAA Women’s Track Championship

I don't think it's that at all, and I don't think there are any examples, anywhere in North America, that support your claim. Transgender is a difficult thing to understand but none of the studies find that, nor people I have met who identify as transgender, the reason for identifying that way...

Coach adding to the schedule without discussing it with parents

Yes, it happens, but no, not all teams do that. One team that we played for was actually pretty good about telling us when we were playing and more importantly which weeks we were not. They avoided playing too early in the spring and too late in the fall, thus rain was not typically a problem...

    Playing Time and Player Growth

Your way is generally good and the way I see most teams go about the PT issue. The very best teams that I see (not record wise necessarily, but the ones who never seem to be looking for multiple players every season and you never hear complaints about) manage to get everyone into every game and...

Mississippi will be the first state to require the four most dangerous positions (including catcher) to wear face masks in High School.

The good news is that most of the parents (like me) who buy them for our DD's are going to be just as concerned as you are about quality, and will do our homework before buying one. I agree in theory that there should be some standard that mask vendors have to meet, but I disagree that we should...

    scoring a SB

No, it isn't defensive indifference if there is no throw, you credit the stolen base because the fielding team made the decision to defend home plate by not throwing per Rule 15(b)(4) if I read this correctly. Defensive indifference only applies if the game is out of hand and the defensive team...

DDs see no honor in being called up to varsity, and riding the bench-hear me out.

This is a tough one, not so easy to just say suck it up, wait your turn, seniority matters when there are real human emotions involved. It unfortunately happens in every high school activity. Best advice i can give you is to remind the kids they made commitments for this year. Honor those...

Travel Ball is Killing Rec Ball

Your initial post might literally be true. But, the reasons why it might be accurate are more complex than just saying the decline in rec ball was caused by the rise of travel softball. There are a ton of rec leagues that don't survive because they really haven't adjusted to fit the needs of...

Is the female multi-sport HS athlete a thing of the past?

I don't disagree with either ang2 or chinamigarden. Solid points. I can only discuss what I know and/or see, and locally I see very few kids who play multi sports in HS, we see some in middle school and some say they will continue as they get older, but the reality is they always seem to settle...
