    Coach chooses to bat 9

You are not looking for an argument, but respectfully, I must disagree. While I recognize that you are talking about skill development, there is no way to replicate game pressure other than being in a game. The mental part of player development is critical. A coach making the choice to roll with...

    Coach chooses to bat 9

I sense you have an axe to grind. It's entirely possible that you may be familiar with some rec coaches who know their W-L records, but I'd bet any amount of money that you do not know any high-level TB coaches - 12U-and-up - who have any idea what their records are. They may be able to tell...

Anyone still playing? Got shut down again here in So Cal

Aw, d***!! 2020 is taking no prisoners. Sorry about that, y'all.

Although I admire your candor here, there is a 0% chance we're having any conversation like that on game day. I will make time the following week to address any concerns you may have, but we're not talking lineups, strategy, or playing time* during the tournament. What are your player's goals...

Anyone still playing? Got shut down again here in So Cal

Update this evening from USA Preps: The player who received a positive test result yesterday, prompting us to shut down the Archie Gubler Complex, was re-tested today and received notice of a negative result. The initial test was a FREE test conducted by her local county and took several...

Anyone still playing? Got shut down again here in So Cal

    1) I'm not going to debate this. 2) There is a rule set that governed this event. It doesn't matter whether one likes, believes in, or trusts the guidelines. The teams who wanted to have an event had to follow those rules. I hope that everyone makes it home safely.

Anyone still playing? Got shut down again here in So Cal

Totally different. If they didn't know, then no one is looking at them sideways now. That's forgivable. But making the trip before you had the result in hand? There was no need. My position: From top to bottom, regardless of what anyone felt or believed, everyone at that complex was following...

    Interference question

Interference is an immediate dead ball, you're right, but we're talking about a difference of 1.5 seconds or so. Strangely nuanced, perhaps, but field ump might be looking to see whether the kids complete the play. It sounds like everyone did what they were supposed to on the play.

Was I right, runner hit by ball question

It's 8u. "See ball. Hit ball. Go get snack." Those are the rules. For the parents: "We have a very well-stocked snack bar. Go get snack."

USSSA # of outs mistake ruling

If we're going to make stuff up, let's at least make it make sense, so that everyone is a little upset at the outcome: BR out, R1 scores, R2 sent back to 3B. 2 out, play ball.

    Serious issue

I'm glad that some action is being taken. I believe the original response or non-response is indicative of just how under-prepared we are at a societal level to deal with made-for-TV drama in real life. Among some number of people, threats of self-harm are an immediate red flag, especially when...

    NCAA softball is toast!

There's no real value in the "race to be right". Have a plan, have a backup plan, and then have a backup for your backup plan. Oh, and be ready when your number is called. I only know what I know - several colleges and universities have announced online/remote courses for the fall. When CSU...

    Coronavirus

Sacramento (USA Softball) is suspending play until at least April 1st. It's not a mandate, but a recommendation. Most local leagues will probably govern themselves accordingly, which will put them in line with the schools who've put spring sports on hold for now.

My daughter is dreading high school ball approaching

Everything is relative, I know, but on balance, that makes no sense whatsoever. There's nothing you said about the HS program that makes it seem worthy of attending even a single tryout. I'd recommend another extracurricular or volunteer work in a field that interests her.

Incorrect Rule Interpretations - a running list

Is there any conversation on the site about new pitching rules for USA Softball? I do not have a 2020 rule book and heard a rumor that there are "significant" changes for this year.

    College camp expectatoins

    1) What is DD's age/grad year? 2) What's the purpose of the camp? 3) What is DD's reason for attending this specific camp? There are some rules of thumb and then there are no rules, of thumb or otherwise. Some coaches want to see her dominate the way she knows how, while others want their...

Is it possible to wear out a glove in 18 months?

Same. I think DD's A2000 is 5 years old now, but she did miss about a year during that time. No signs of breakdown despite heavy use. Very basic level of care: keeps it dry, gets cleaned and conditioned every few months, stores it with ball inside 100% of the time. It's been re-laced once...

    I remember respecting Jessica Mendoza

Nah. In the moment, he felt one way. OK. Now with the passage of time, he's got more clarity and more voice. And after getting dragged for her earlier remarks (thought she wasn't responsible for the conflict-of-interest), Jessica thought about a few things and did some damage control:

    I remember respecting Jessica Mendoza

Saying something is "as American as baseball and apple pie" used to mean something positive, I thought. OK, so I don't feel like a fool anymore for once believing in an ideal that never actually existed, but it's my position that mechanical cheating is at least as bad as chemical cheating...

    I remember respecting Jessica Mendoza

You're right about that. Maybe the rule is antiquated or pointless, but that's what they have in place. You're also right about the solution - it doesn't seem that complicated to me at all. Baseball and sports media talk obsessively about the genius of "analytics" - way to go, Dave Roberts - but...
