No, it does not matter and I was not trying to indicate that it does. The frustrating part is that coaches notice infractions and are willing to overlook them until it puts their team at a disadvantage so they try to use the rule book as an additional weapon against the opposing team. If you're worried about the batting order/lineup card so much then work to get it correct as soon as you notice, and someone notices that as soon as they receive the card.

This past weekend at a tournament that was following ASA/USA rules we had a situation where the opposite team's coach forgot to put a girl's number on the lineup card that he gave both us and the umpire. This was in the championship game. At the meeting at the plate the umpire looked over our lineup cards, handed them back and asked us to look them over and tell him if they are good and then give them back as official. We both gave them back and he accepted them. Once back at the dugout we realized that one of his batters had her name on it but no number, and they had no names on their jerseys. We did not call attention to it, until that girl smashed a double in the third inning. We called time and brought it to the umpire. He looked it over and conferenced with the field umpires. The tournament director was sitting in a cart outside the fence, so the umpire walked over and asked the tournament director for a ruling. The tournament director said as long as their is a name on the card the player is not penalized..... We argued but to no avail.

I logged on to see 4 pages and no one took the time to actually post the rule. Some of the comments about warnings and restrictions to the dugout don't apply here. Those restrictions are for high school rules. The OP said it was ASA.

USA Rule 4.A.1 states:
"Line-up cards are to be completed and submitted to the official scorer and umpire at the start of each game. A starting player shall be official when the line-up is inspected and approved by the plate umpire and team manager at the pre-game meeting. The line-up shall contain the first and last name, defensive position and uniform number of each player. If a wrong number is on the line-up, correct it and continue playing with no penalty. All available substitutes should be listed in the designated place by their last name, first name and uniform number."

Bottom line, in USA softball, just fix it. As an umpire in this situation I would ask the player her name. If she is the right name, no violation, play on. 2 weeks ago a coach came to me and said he was putting #77 into pitch. I did not have a 77 on my lineup card. I showed card to coach and he said, oops, sorry, its listed as #7. Same result. No violation, fix-it, play on.
