If it does not matter why not move it?

A couple of compelling reasons have been made to move, what is the reason not too?

The most compelling reason to move; is school seasons limiting opportunities for those that are a grade younger. Another is limited 18u based upon graduation.
Putting the age cutoff in the middle of the season just seems odd. May not be impactful but would like to know reasoning.

I think the obvious point is no it isn't the same for everyone now. Of the big four sanctions we have one using Jan 1 absolutely (USSSA), one that mostly uses Jan 1 (PGF), and the other two are using Sept 1.

I'm guessing that it's a hold over to when softball wasn't played year round. So, Jan 1 made sense for the Spring season.

Yeah that does seem logical.

Just use grade/Grad year, in the end this is the only dates that really matters. Then the complainers can bitch about the kids that got held back.
